Within a year of their first gig, The Rock Of Travolta had played in front of 45,000 people whilst supporting Radiohead at their immense South Park gig, having been invited personally by Yorke and Co. TROT have played four UK headline tours, recorded a John Peel session and released two EPs plus an album – all of which were met with critical acclaim. Following all this and a significant line up change, the band took on a new approach to writing and entered a self-imposed exile, taking time to ensure that the new record did justice to their vision. Fine Lines establishes a new era for The Rock Of Travolta and again the band are receiving critical acclaim. link

With varied backgrounds, Secret Cinema Band's music is both moving and hard to define. The band collectively writes its music and use unusual instruments, commonly replacing a bass with a fx'd electrical violin and using old electronic toys. This unusual approach has led to comparisons with Pink Floyd, Radiohead, TV On The Radio and The Mars Volta. link

Wednesday 27th July – The Macbeth

The Miserable Rich's story began in Brighton in 2007. Will Calderbank (cello), Mike Siddell (violin) and James de Malplaquet (vocals) met each other when playing in the much-loved alt-folk band Shoreline. James had a collection of songs of his own, and he and Will had started to work on these, playing with various electronica ideas (perhaps influenced by James's time touring with Bonobo) and performing as a band under the name The Grape Authority.

It was James’ idea to bring Mike in and to revisit some of the songs with the idea of using cello and violin to play all the lead parts, much like a baroque chamber ensemble. They gathered at James's flat, where he played them Colin Blunstone's 1970 classic “Say You Don't Mind” and the Kronos Quartet's Kraftwerk covers album. The initial concept was born, and this is what really separates The Miserable Rich from the plethora of bands currently employing strings in their lineup: where other bands use cello and violin to augment the standard indie set up of guitar, bass and drums, The Miserable Rich set out deliberately to turn that notion on its head, the strings becoming the feature in the arrangements, with guitar and bass providing the rhythm and harmonic backing.

They started recording, and over the summer of 2007 (mostly in James's flat in Hove) they put together twelve songs with a little help from their friends, now more widely known as The Willkommen Collective.

The first single, Boat Song, was iTunes Single Of The Week, and has become a long-term favourite of Marc Riley and Guy Garvey on 6Music. The debut album, Twelve Ways To Count, was 6Music Album of The Day in November 2008.

“heartbreakingly beautiful” 8/10 NME
“The Miserable Rich’s striking, fully fledged debut immediately sets them apart.” Q
“Breathtaking… Easily the best record of 2008” Americana UK
“gentle brilliance” Bearded

Sophomore album, Of Flight & Fury, saw the band extend their reach, with sessions on Radio 4's Loose Ends and Mark Lamarr's Radio 2 show, God's Own Jukebox. Two videos (for “Somerhill” and “Hungover”) were filmed with Wasp Video, leading to the band to being invited to score the short film “The Girl Is Mime” for the 48hr Film Project. The film stars Martin Freeman (The Office, Sherlock), and as well as winning the top awards in the International 48hr Film Project competition, is showing at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.

“as if they captured the sun and learned how to play it” 10/10 Outline
“Very likely the best record of 2010.” 10/10 Americana UK
“a perfect accompaniment to those lazy summer nights” High Voltage
“a rich distinctive sound; The Miserable Rich are instrumentally very talented, sound like no one else and have a sense of the old world about them” 9/10 Virgin Online

Two critically lauded albums and three years of touring later, the band decided to change things round a little. They holed themselves up in a stately home in Norwich to write and record their third album, bringing in a recording engineer and a drummer. Blickling Hall, the haunted ancestral home of the Boleyn family, provided the setting, and they spent February 2011 putting together the tracks for the follow up to 2010's Of Flight & Fury.

New single “Anything's Possible” is released on 19th June.

The new album, titled “Miss You In The Days” will be released in October.

Exit Ten - Birmingham

Exit Ten – Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester

21st July 2011 – Birmingham Rainbow

22nd July 2011 – Leeds Cockpit

23rd July 2011 – Manchester Moho Live

Reading’s finest rockers have been locked up in Outhouse Studios for the past few months recording the followup to 2008’s smash Remember The Day. Moving away from the metalcore sound of old, the band return with a more heavy rock sound, with the new as yet untitled album due for release in September 2011. It was produced in the band’s hometown of Reading with Jon Mitchell (Enter Shikari, You Meet At Six, Funeral For A Friend).

Recently seen destroying crowds across the UK on the Jagermeister Music Tour alongside Sylosis and The Defiled, with a set at Hit The Deck festival in Nottingham this Sunday, EXIT TEN are back and out for blood.

Belleruche - Manchester

Belleruche – Manchester, Liverpool

Thursday 19th of May – The Roadhouse, Manchester
Thursday 26th of May – The Shipping Forecast, Liverpool

Having sold over 30,000 albums, Belleruche are currently teetering on the brink of stardom. The fresh energy and fuzzy vintage charm of their first LP, ‘Turntable Soul Music’ (2007) quickly won the attention of the press, along with a fervent fanbase. 2008’s ‘The Express’ hit number 1 in the iTunes electronic album chart, with rave reviews, daytime BBC 6 Music support, a live Radio 2 session and an iTunes Single of the Week, and saw the band strengthen their foothold in the overcrowded UK landscape.

2010 saw them band release their outstanding third album, ‘270 Stories’ (from which three singles have been lifted – ‘Clockwatching’, ‘Fuzz Face’ and ‘3 Amp Fuse’ receiving a total of 250,000 hits on You Tube), and tour various spots around the UK, Europe and the USA, showcasing yet another evolution in the Belleruche sound… “We’re playing new stuff in new ways: Ricky is playing bass on stage now for some songs, Kathrin’s using loopers and guitar delay pedals and Modest is using Abelton and loads of new things he doesn’t really understand.” With a great reputation already for their live performances, these new developments – described in characteristic self-effacing style – are set to add another level of intrigue.

Belleruche’s distinctive sound is a self-styled brand of handmade hip hop blues soul: think Sarah Vaughan, Django Reinhardt and Cut Chemist stuck in a lift with Russian beer and a sampler.

The trio is made up of Kathrin deBoer (vocals), Ricky Fabulous (guitar) and DJ Modest (decks); the band was formed after Ricky and Modest, who played bizarre turntable and guitar sets in London bars, bumped in to Kathryn in the market one day. She did some singing over a cup of tea with the pair and Belleruche was born.

“Excellent…sounds a bit like the XX gone reggaefied” – MIXMAG

“SINGLES OF THE WEEK – A nice ‘n’ tight break from mainstream routine” – METRO

“The chemistry that runs between the three members comes out on disc” – CLASH

“BAND OF THE WEEK: something truly exciting….a place where blues, soul, hip hop and rock influences fuse to produce something organic…a truly great album” – NOTION MAGAZINE

Matt Berry - Leeds

Matt Berry – Leeds

Matt Berry & The Maypoles are pleased to announce their UK tour in April.

Matt Berry released his debut album, ‘Witchazel’ on the 7th March 2011 to critical acclaim, which is followed by the single ‘Take My Hand’ on 4th April.. Recorded almost entirely in his front room 'Witchazel' is a collection of thirteen songs which will touch a central nerve with anyone with a fondness for British psychedelia or 70’s folk. For Matt, it’s a labour of love, pure and simple.

Having starred as Todd Rivers in Garth Merenghi’s Darkplace and Douglas Reynholm in The IT Crowd and co-written his own musical parody AD/BC: A Rock Opera with Richard Ayoade, Matt’s own BBC3 comedy show Snuff Box (with Rich Fulcher) was, as they say, “well received”. His position as one of the UK’s most compelling comedy talents was duly confirmed with a nomination as Best Male Newcomer at the 2007 Comedy Awards.

The Strange Death Of Liberal England - Manchester

The Strange Death Of Liberal England – Manchester, Leeds, London

The Strange Death of Liberal England return with a new single, Come On You Young Philosophers! To celebrate the release, the band play a clutch of live shows throughout the UK in May.

‘Come On You Young Philosophers!’ is taken from the band’s acclaimed album ‘Drown Your Heart Again’, released through Republic of Music at the end of 2010.
Having made waves with their emergence in 2007 and a string of well received singles and the mini album ‘Forward March’, the band disappeared from public view with the exception of one, all seated, orchestral show at their home town’s Portsmouth New Royal Theatre in 2009. Having worked with producer David M Allen on their debut album after he approached them and declared himself a fan of their work, the band’s first return to the limelight was as support to Editors throughout the UK in March last year. Renowned for their colourful, rowdy, often chaotic shows, the band have collected a fanatical fanbase, evinced by their sold out show at Portsmouth’s Theatre Royal as headliners of the Portsmouth Festival in 2010. Little wonder that our advice is to make sure you see one of the following dates

3rd May – Manchester Roadhouse
4th May – Leeds The Cockpit
6th May – London Boston Arms

All tickets available from Ticketwerk: link

‘Come on You Young Philosophers!’ is released by Republic Of Music on the 16th May 2011 as a digital download and includes new track, ‘Sometimes I just need you there.’

Gareth Gates - London

Gareth Gates – London

Gareth Gates with full live band – Wednesday 29th June @ Heaven, London

The original Pop Idol graduate Gareth Gates takes a break from his Les Miserables anniversary tour to get back on stage, performing his own hits and showcasing some new material.

Accompanied by a full live band, this long awaited return to his own music will be welcome news to his ardent fans. Songs from his top ten albums such as ‘Unchained Melody’, ‘Anyone Of Us’, ‘The Long And Winding Road’ and ‘What My Heart Wants To Say’ are sure to be included along with some exciting new tracks to be performed for the first time.

Gareth has never truly been away, but now he is back.

—————————————————–

Born in Bradford in July 1984 Gareth Gates always knew he wanted to be a performer. It’s well known as a young boy he was head chorister for Bradford Cathedral Choir, even performing solo for the Queen when she visited in 1997. What’s less well known is that he has a natural gift for music and as well as being a faultless vocalist he is an accomplished musician, playing piano and guitar to a high standard.

In 2002 Gareth was famously runner up to will Young in the UK’s first Pop Idol. Instead of disappearing into ‘Pop Oblivion’ he carved out a very successful career for himself, having hits and travelling worldwide.

In the UK alone Gareth sold 3.5 million records, released 3 albums and had 4 UK number 1 singles. He won record of the year in 2002 and with that has the second best selling single of the ‘noughties’ with Unchained Melody. Gareth was only beaten for best selling single of the decade by his fellow competitor; that years winner Will Young with the song Evergreen. Outside of the UK Gareth was awarded Best International Male in 2003/4 from MTV Asia, MTV China and MTV Taiwan.

During this time it is well documented that Gareth continued to struggle with his speech – something that had been a challenge for his for many years and stuck in people’s minds with the, now infamous, Pop Idol audition. He decided to take positive action and enrolled on the McGuire Programme. This, it’s fair to say changed his life both personally and professionally. From being unable to partake in a pre-recorded interview without agonising discomfort he appeared on the Jonathan Ross show in 2007. It was here he showed the charming and amusing side, that before the speech therapy programme wouldn’t have been possible. Gareth has since trained and is a qualified course instructor – but still has to work on his speech on a daily basis. link

In 2008 Gareth donned the sequins and lycra every Sunday night to take part in the hit ITV1 TV show Dancing on Ice, eventually coming fourth. Not bad for someone who couldn’t even stand up on the ice at the beginning!

Post Dancing on Ice, Gareth decided to change musical direction and accepted the lead role in ‘Joseph And His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’. It was a role he first played at the tender age of 8 in school and proved to be an ideal start to his theatrical career. During this time Gareth also tackled his first pantomime as Prince Charming, in Cinderella – a role he agreed to due to the outstanding cast which included Alistair McGowan and Joanna Paige.

In 2009 Gareth auditioned and impressed Sir Cameron MackIntosh and accepted the role of Marius, in the 25th anniversary tour of Les Miserables. This mammoth 10 month tour has played to sell out audiences as far a field as Manchester, Norwich, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Paris, Bristol, Salford and Southampton. It will end at the Barbican in London with 22 special performances at the show’s original home. (14 September – 2nd October). This brand new production features new direction, staging and arrangement – and Gareth has wowed audiences up and down the country.
There is also a new cast recording available shortly, on which he features – which you can also buy at the Barbican.

The rest of 2010 and 2011 promise to be and exciting time for Gareth with offers flooding in – and just not enough time to do them all!

You can catch him up and down the country performing his own material and also DJ’ing – something he has proved to be a natural at – surprising and impressing all that see him.

Pure Reason Revolution
Pure Reason Revolution are proof a band can be influenced by ELO, Smashing Pumpkins, Soulwax, Depeche Mode and The Beach Boys all at once, yet make sense of a vision that brings those disparate voices together into a sound that combines electronic dance rhythms, pop hooks and sublime vocal harmonies with huge rock riffs.

Alan McGee released their first single on Poptones, Sony BMG released a mini album and debut album. In March 2009 they released their second longplayer ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’ on Superball Music, a rockier and more electronic proposition than its predecessor, it was typical of their ability to fuse seemingly paradoxical ambitions and tastes.

Over the years PRR have ‘stuck to their guns’ and built a formidable live reputation sharing stages alongside the likes of Mew, Porcupine Tree, Secret Machines and Editors. Since November 2006 the band line-up has remained unchanged.

In March-April 2009 their 30 date headline tour covered 12 European countries and during the second half of 2009 they appeared at European festivals alongside The Prodigy and Placebo before starting to record again.

Their third album “Hammer and Anvil” was released in Europe and the US in Oct 2010 and Chloë says: “When we started we were unaware of what we could achieve as individuals, now we’ve all learned what our strengths and weaknesses are and how to use them.”

The Urban Voodoo Machine - Dingwalls

The Urban Voodoo Machine – Dingwalls, London

The Urban Voodoo Machine takes over London!

The Urban Voodoo Machine celebrate the release of their brand new album “In Black ‘N’ Red with a headline show at Camden’s Dingwalls on Tuesday 17th May. This will be part of their biggest, most comprehensive UK tour to date, as they look to conquer the country with their unique brand of sleaze-tinged, dark-edged, rockabilly-flavoured, gypsy blues and folk-punk – or Bourbon Soaked Gypsy Blues Bop'n'Stroll as the group like to call it!

This key night of the tour, at one of London’s most famous venues, the 500-Capacity Dingwalls, has been arranged for May 17th – Norwegian Independence Day. With singer Paul-Ronney Angel from Norway, and London’s Norwegian community in tow, this promises to be one hell of a party!

“Using horns, violin, accordion, banjo and multiple percussionists, the band veers into mariachi-influenced blues, whiskey-soaked country rags and punkabilly-style rave-ups.” (The Washington Post)

2011 looks to be the best year yet for the black-suited, red-shirted, London-based collective who recently received a nomination for the ‘Best New Band’ award by Classic Rock magazine. Led by the darkly charismatic Paul-Ronney Angel, The Urban Voodoo Machine is a supremely talented collective of London-based musicians who have been bringing the spirit of the carnie to an ever-growing audience of dedicated fans these past few years.

“The U.V.M. rise above the mere cabaret, by simply being very, very good” (Q)

Although officially a 9-piece, The Urban Voodoo Machine’s live shows can sometimes feature up to 12 people on stage. The group play a colourful array of instruments including guitars, drums, fiddle, trumpet, banjo, washboard, upright bass, gong, mandolin, accordion, harmonica, saxophone, tuba, sousaphone and even empty bottles and tie racks to build their own unique and infectious sound. It is this sound that has seen the group invited to play at festivals throughout the UK and abroad including Glastonbury, Download, Hard Rock Calling and Latitude and led to support slots with The Pogues, The New York Dolls, Goran Bregović and Paul McCartney.

Revered by London’s underground cabaret scene, The Urban Voodoo Machine started up the legendary, alternative, monthly club night, Gypsy Hotel in October 2006: the massively popular night is still going strong and a couple of times a year the group headlines and sells out this exciting and eclectic rock ‘n’ roll cabaret.

“…a hellacious swing that causes dames to sway and dudes to drink!” (Big Cheese)

Anyone who has not yet discovered the arresting charms of The Urban Voodoo Machine is simply urged to do so now……

The Miserable Rich - The Lexington

The Miserable Rich – The Lexington, London

The Miserable Rich
plus We Used To Make Things / Josh Bray
Wednesday 25th May at The Lexington
Tickets £8 from link

Glasswerk Concerts welcome The Miserable Rich to The Lexington, London on Wednesday 25th May to play their most exciting gig yet…

The Miserable Rich formed in 2007. With their layers of delicate, elegant strings and rich vocals you might expect this Brighton based band to be winking at the sommelier as they win another debate about philosophy to a round of applause. But despite travelling around Europe – playing their own gigs and supporting the likes of Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan – plus grabbing iTunes Song Of The Week and 6Music album of the day, they seem to have become mishap magnets – there have been traffic accidents and breakdowns, missed planes and deadlines, though they will be the first to admit that some of this might be self-inflicted.

Their distinctive chamber orchestra sound is created using cello and violin as the primary lead instruments, augmented by double bass, acoustic guitar and occasionally piano.
They have released two albums, Twelve Ways To Count (2008) and Of Flight & Fury (2010). link

With a combined age of 233 years, We Used to Make Things represent everything that is wonderful and unfashionable about nostalgic pop!

They formed three years ago from the unconventional union of a sophisticated metropolitan Londoner and a wild and wise Yorkshireman.

Taking influence from a shared love of The Kinks, The Beatles, ethereal vocal harmonies and tea, they write songs that send you on a journey through the open-plan offices of disaffected middle-management and the yearnings of love lost and unrequited. link

Devon born Josh Bray brings something acoustically refreshing onto the folk-blues scene with his debut album ‘Whisky and Wool’. Growing up listening to the likes of Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Led Zeppelin it wasn’t until later that Josh heard the late Nick Drake performing ‘Riverman’, that suddenly it all made sense to him and he soon became immersed in 1970s folk/rock. link

Glasswerk.co.uk Presents…

Harrys Gym
Tuesday 15th February
The Roadhouse, Manchester

Critically acclaimed Norwegian four-piece Harrys Gym release their second album What Was Ours Can’t Be Yours in the UK and mainland Europe this February on new Oslo based label Splendour (started by the management company representing Lindstrøm, Jaga Jazzist, Serena Maneesh and others). Blending beguiling pop with ethereal sounds, Harry’s Gym create epic, glacial and distinctly Nordic soundscapes guided by vocalist/songwriter Anne Lise Frøkedal’s hauntingly beautiful vocals.

On the back of their self-titled debut album (which was released in May 2010 on Norwegian label Hype City) the band earned a “New Band Of The Day” feature in Guardian and heaped praise from the likes of Drowned in Sound, Uncut and Music Week amongst others. It also saw Harrys Gym subsequently sign to major label Universal in Norway for their follow up – quite an achievement for a “difficult” pop band.

Harrys Gym toured the album in the UK, including a performance at the tastemaker festival Standon Calling, where Clash wrote this review: “Harrys Gym… possess an elegance that betrays their… name and conjures the kind of hypnotic, billowing, electro-rock, it seems only Scandinavians can”. In addition Harrys Gym managed to captivate audiences at festivals such as Øya, Roskilde, Eurosonic, Great Escape, Iceland Airwaves and Culture Collide in Los Angeles.

For their follow-up, they chose to work with up-and-coming British producer James Rutledge. Rutledge and Anne Lise Frøkedal bonded at once over the phone from Oslo to London, where they discussed Vashti Bunyan, folk music and the crossover between programming and running naked in the forest. Not to mention a shared fondness for salty licorice.

Rutledge sent a Spotify playlist to the band to give an idea of where he thought the music was heading. This included names such as Brian Eno, Atlas Sound and MGMT, which was enough to convince Frøkedal and the other members that they definitely should book him a ticket to snowy Oslo to begin recording.

Together they spent hours sending ideas back and forth from Oslo to London. Then James headed over to Harrys Gym´s own studio where they laid down the majority of the tracks before going to London to mix the material in the psychedelic atmosphere of Strongroom Studios, where the mixes were put down by Jimmy Robertson (Big Pink, Florence & The Machine, Klaxons).

Frøkedal said this about the recording process: “It was nice and refreshing to have so many ideas in the room all of the time and to have James somewhat become a fifth member of the band”.

Mike Dignam
7th March – London, Upstairs @ The Garage
8th March – Nottingham, Rescue Rooms
10th March – Birmingham, The Flapper
11th March – Manchester, Nexus Art Cafe
13th March – Glasgow, King Tuts
14th March – Newcastle, The Cluny2

Mike Dignam follows up his tour support of Joe Brooks in 2010 with his first UK headline tour. During the JB tour Mike gave away 2000 free acoustic EPs with songs Anyone Else, Night With You, Bring Me Back and Taken Out featuring on it. Now, the songs have been re-recorded with a full band, and will be released on 7th March 2011, as a limited edition EP.

A free download of a track off the EP and taster streams will be available from the 20th Feb via the website link

Mike Dignam at the tender age of seventeen wrote and recorded his debut album, producing a collection of songs full of teen angst and energy, wrapped up with dynamic vocals and composition belying his years. He put some of the songs on the internet and let people here them (back when MySpace was novel) and 30,000 fans quickly appeared on his profile. Without anyone else to pay for it, he saved up and paid for the pressing of the CDS (quite a substantial investment for a 17 year old); but this proved to be a good decision as he sold out of the delivery via the internet, at gigs and busking.

Justifiably proud of this fledgling composition Mike set about honing his song writing skills, searching for that hit hook. This journey took him through collaborations with international song writers, winning competitions (under 18 Youth Music winner), going to college to study music, asking for advice off everyone he met… and busking on the mean streets of London.

Without making banal comparisons you wouldn’t be a million miles off the mark with favourable likening to James Morrison and Jason Mraz.

Two years later, having been constantly writing, the beginnings of album number two are taking shape. A free acoustic mini album is due out end of November 2010, to coincide with supporting Joe Brooks on his UK tour. Then 2011 is when it will all begin to come together for this rapidly maturing talent, with his first UK tour accompanied by an EP, festival appearances, European tour and more.

Gin Panic & Friends - 93 Feet East

Gin Panic & Friends – 93 Feet East, London

Gin Panic / Anison / ExLibras / Wayter
Wednesday 26th January @ 93 Feet East, London

Tickets £5 from: link

Wednesday 26th January sees four of London’s hottest bands converge on 93 Feet East for what is sure to be a great night of live music.

Formed in a dimly lit, disused brewery in Staffordshire, headliners Gin Panic rehearsed inbetween the huge metallic vats and gigged all over the UK. Now based in London they infuse motorik Krautrock drums, distorted punk bass and soaring post-rock dynamics that ranges from the delicate to the destructive.

They are currently recording the follow-up to their 2007 EP “Punching Numbers Into A Machine”, due for release in April 2011, along with an extensive UK/European tour in May. The band have lot's of projects in the pipeline including a feature video with director Christaan Faberj-Jong for new single “Cities” being released at the end of March. link

Shimmering and glimmering they come, Anison are a cascade of synth and guitar-heavy magic that one hand dazzles you with its depth and on the other makes you swoon over its simplicity. Having already enjoyed slots on Radio 1 and the XFM playlist, the Kingston based quartet set themselves apart from the bands they list as influences through true originality. It's musicians making the stuff according to how they feel it should be, rather than how they are used to hearing it. Their music is a rush of melancholy that engrossed through its many layers, ignited by a set of delicate intros that came as a calm before the proverbial storm.

They release brand new track 'The Colour Red' (from the forthcoming album), received it's Radio debut on XFM, as a free download on the 16th January for a limited period only. The free download can be found here: link

Formed in South West London a little under a year ago, Ex Libras produce a beautiful mix of the melodic, ambient siren song and ear shattering emotional explosions. Experimenting with hypnotic live sampling and devastatingly heavy rock blow-outs the band have developed an impressively dynamic live show creating something spontaneous and all encapsulating.

Ex Libras continue into the new year with the release of Single 'Teenage Eyes', taken off their critically acclaimed EP 'Cut(s)'. Working alongside talented emerging director Beau Fowler, the band have created an astonishingly beautiful music video to accompany the track, released 28th February 2011. link

And kicking off the night is Wayter, who have a download single “Twenty” coming out on 21st February. Their album is also due in April. link

Dave McPherson Announces Debut Solo Album

Dave McPherson Announces Debut Solo Album

From 10th January 2011 fans will be able to get involved in helping Dave McPherson’s solo project and career through Pledgemusic.com. All Pledgers will receive a digital copy of the album before it is released, hear exclusive material, videos and other rewards. They will also have the chance to obtain collectibles such as handwritten notes, personalized songs, original artwork and more. Dave will also be donating a portion of his pledge to UNICEF. For more information and to pledge support you can visit the project homepage below on Pledgemusic.com.

link

On speaking about the announcement Dave said “Your support for InMe & my solo work has been consistently overwhelming, so I’ve decided to team up with PledgeMusic to offer you access to a range of unusual and one off treasures that go much further than the usual way artists connect with their fans.”

During his time writing and performing with InMe, Dave has scored a Number One in the UK Rock Charts when he was just 20, played the Main Stage of festivals such as Leeds/Reading, and toured the world – sharing stages with Deftones, Serj Tankian, Feeder, Biffy Clyro, Pendulum and many more. Like the aforementioned Tankian, and the likes of former Million Dead frontman Frank Turner, McPherson is now ready to step out on his own properly as his band enter a new phase following their ‘Best Of’ release.

Flying solo, however, is nothing new to Dave – armed with an acoustic guitar and a disciplined hard work ethic he’s been touring anywhere and everywhere since 2007 and has played over 700 shows. The difference now is that, as opposed to a collection of self-released EP’s that provided snapshots of Dave’s songwriting ability, he has recorded his debut album with a sound that is rich and pure, exploding with feeling and honesty. McPherson has lived and breathed music since childhood, drawing influence from artists such as Talk Talk, Loudon Wainwright III, Pink Floyd, Damien Rice, Amos Lee, Counting Crows & countless other vibrant artists. He is now ready to forge an identity of his own outside of the band that he has dedicated himself to over the past few years.

The album itself sits Dave and his acoustic guitar comfortably at the forefront of a wondrous wall of instrumentation. Recorded by the enigmatic upcoming studio wizard Mike Curtis at CDS Studios, the pair’s unique production method adds to the overall honesty of ‘The Hardship Diaries’.
A full headline tour will coincide with the album’s release in March 2011 and Dave McPherson’s unique voice will continue to be heard by aficionados of melody, true passion and all things euphonic!

Judy Collins

Monday 6th June
The Dance House, Manchester

Judy Collins has thrilled audiences worldwide with her unique blend of interpretative folksongs and contemporary themes. Her impressive career has spanned more than 50 years. At 13, Judy Collins made her public debut performing Mozart's Concerto for Two Pianos but it was the music of such artists as Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, as well as the traditional songs of the folk revival, that sparked Judy’s love of lyrics. She soon moved away from the classical piano and began her lifelong love with the guitar.

In 1961, Judy Collins released her first album, A Maid of Constant Sorrow, at the age of 22 and began a thirty-five year association with Jac Holzman and Elektra Records. She interpreted the songs of fellow artists – particularly the social poets of the time such as Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs and Tom Paxton. Judy was instrumental in bringing other singer-songwriters to a wider audience including poet/musician Leonard Cohen – and musicians Joni Mitchell and Randy Newman.

Judy Collins is also noted for her rendition of Joni Mitchell's “Both Sides Now” on her 1967 album, Wildflowers which has since been entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Winning “Song of the Year” at the 1975 Grammy Awards was Judy's version of “Send in the Clowns,” a ballad written by Stephen Sondheim for the Broadway musical “A Little Night Music.”

Ruarri Joseph

2010 will see the return of Ruarri Joseph, the talented young troubadour who had somewhat of a turbulent 2009. The indie-folk sensation, often likened to Tom Waits, Cat Stevens and even Dylan, will be releasing his much anticipated fourth record, Shoulder to the Wheel, later this year, a project that very nearly didn’t happen. Side tracked by family life for almost a year he found that when he returned to his studio – his garden shed – most of the equipment was either rusted or mouldy, “I had to borrow a lot of stuff this time round” he quips.

Undaunted by such inconveniences, Ruarri decided it was time for a new sound. His latest offering showcases his subtlety in a way not heard before. His rich baritone voice floating right out of the speakers and into your soul, the lyrics possessing a wisdom that wouldn’t seem out of place next to Johnny Cash or Joni Mitchell, there’s no doubt that this is a performer set to be around for years to come.

The highs and lows of the past year are reflected in the album: he had to abandon a tour mid-way when he heard the news that his stepson needed to have major brain surgery, right when his wife was expecting a baby. The Joseph clan, with newly born Harper, decamped to Bristol’s Frenchay hospital for a nail biting few weeks, after which they returned home to be together for the recovery. On top of all this, there was also a tragic loss in the family, his aunty Kate, to whom the album is now dedicated.

Yet despite this heavy backdrop, the album isn’t dark, instead it strikes a reflective note, digging out the positives from seemingly impossible situations. In An Orchard For an Apple the singer professes, “I threw myself in at the deep end from the highest, darkest height, but that’s alright”. The gorgeously sung Severed Dreams confesses, “I got your back and you got mine, all we lacked was space and time”, the harmonious guitar parts and the insisting piano lifting the listener up in spite of the sorrow. It captures perfectly the singer’s presence at this moment in time; Assured and optimistic.

Being philosophical about the twists and turns life can take, is a legacy from his childhood. His dad, an alcoholic microbiologist, was prone to constructing suicide traps around the house. Eventually his mum, a practising witch, decided enough was enough and took her two sons to live in an outback town full of churches in New Zealand.

Ruarri didn’t find God, but he did find out that he wanted to be a musician and so as soon as he could at the age of 16, he came back to England on his own, with a bag of clothes, his guitar and a head full of ideas. While he worked on material and muscled his way into the industry, though open mic and support slots, he lived in a shabby London flat, with a heroin addict prone to stealing his possessions. A couple of years later, when his girlfriend found out she was pregnant, Ruarri moved to Cornwall to become a teenage dad. Despite his responsibilities, which involved taking on a series of dreary jobs, Ruarri’s ambitions were undented and he continued coming up with new material and gigging around the circuit.

In 2007, his talent and hard work was recognized when Ruarri was signed to Atlantic. After a heady year, Ruarri decided a major label wasn’t for him. He wanted to stay true to his music and so left before completion of the now lost “2nd album” to set up his own label, PIP which released his critically acclaimed Both Sides of the Coin, the album he was promoting when he received the bad news about his eldest son.

It seems the break from music has allowed the artist to nurture a maturity unmatched by so many so-called singer songwriters, and defy any pigeon holing so set upon him by an industry lacking in imagination. He is here for the long run and appears he won’t be beaten down by anything. In his own words from a new song, “Every corner shouts to spin on my heels but I’m far too stubborn with needs that must so 1…2…3…keep on strolling.”

In a world where riffs are king and master, TO THE BONES are essential. Hailing from glamorous Bolton, the four-piece clash together a feral mix of hooks, melody and feedback, like The Pixies covering Motorhead, or Kyuss attempting a ‘pop’ record. A straight ahead nasty mix of dark and angry scuzz rock, the band return to the fray on November 22nd with their brand new four track ‘Astral Magic’ EP, produced by Sean Genockey (Reuben, The Futureheads, Baddies, Tom McRae).

Having spent the past 4/5 months in deep hibernation writing and recording the EP (coming out ever now and again for an incendiary live show here and there), the band drew on a massive range of inspiration and influences for the new material, including Nirvana, Qotsa, Pixies, Foo Fighters, Smashing Pumpkins, Manic Street Preachers, At The Drive In, Deftones, Weezer, Sonic Youth, Motorhead and Black Sabbath. We really could just keep going though.
Live wise, TO THE BONES will be embarking on a monstrous UK tour in NOV/DEC to support the release of the ‘Astral Magic’ EP.

Having released a split single through Org Records at the start of 2008, TO THE BONES signed up with new label Medici Records in May. In July, the band released a double A-side made up of the scuzzed-up fuzzed-out melody of 'Sonic Mammoth' and the terrifying aural assault of 'Sharkie's Bone Symphony'. They received airplays from Zane Lowe (who also invited them down to play at his TV show pilot at Air Studios) and Bruce Dickinson at the BBC and were invited to record an Xfm session for John Kennedy. The NME, Rock Sound and The Fly wrote nice things about them (including a full page NME Radar piece). Even MTV2 noticed what was going on, playing the band's video on 120 Minutes and Headbanger's Ball. Having heard about the building buzz, producer Dave Eringa (Manics, Idlewild, Ash) offered his services to the band for free. In 24 hours, the band recorded and mixed their second Medici Records single. Entitled Rex, and released on September 29th, it's a hypnotic, mesmerising blend of crushing riffs and tribal, chanted melody. It's a song that demands an immediate re-listen – and then another, and another and another…

In the last year, TO THE BONES have toured and played live with the likes of The Eighties Matchbox B-line disaster, Pulled apart by Horses, Kong, The Eagles of Death Metal, Dinosaur Pile Up, Sebastian Grainger (ex Death from above 1979), Baddies, Selfish C**t, Oceansize, Deerhunter and William Control to name a few. In the last year, the band have also played at Camden Crawl, The Great Escape, Guilfest, Reading and Leeds Festival, Offset, Hungry Pigeon Festival, Live at Leeds, a few Levis Ones To Watch and BBC Introducing showcases and many more.

Matt Berry is best known for playing idiots in award winning comedy shows such as 'The I.T. Crowd', 'Garth Marenghi's Darkplace', 'Snuff Box' and 'The Mighty Boosh' but he is a celebrated musician and composer in his own right.

As a musician, he composed all music for Snuff Box as well the music for AD/BC: A Rock Opera, which he co-wrote with Richard Ayoade. AD/BC was a half-hour parody of overblown musicals in general and Jesus Christ Superstar in particular, telling the story of the innkeeper who allowed Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus to sleep in his manger. AD/BC was broadcast in December 2004 and featured Fulcher and The Mighty Boosh stars Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding. The DVD was released in the UK on 19 November 2007. He also performed a song for an episode of Garth Marenghi's Darkplace entitled One Track Lover, a spoof of cheesy romantic 80s songs.

Berry also composed music for the BBC 2 Steve Coogan comedy Saxondale and appeared in the first and third episodes of the second series of the show. He composed the theme song for the Channel 4 sketch show Blunder. He is also credited on The Peter Serafinowicz Show.

He has released one album Opium which was a limited edition self-released record and will now release his debut album proper Witchazel in March 2011, coming out on Acid Jazz Records. He toured with Jonas 3 several times in 2006 and 2007. He stated in the first issue of Bearded Magazine that he was producing and collaborating on new material with sixties soul singer Geno Washington and was to record a new album. This album turned out to be Witchazel, which Berry released online for a limited time free download on 11 March 2009 only. The album will now be officially released and will be available in stores in March 2011.

Akala

Akala

Academy 3, Manchester

Doors 7.30pm

Over the last few years Kingslee ‘Akala’ Daley, 26, has emerged from London’s hip hop underground and into the mainstream as one of the leaders of a new British artistic renaissance. Bursting into the underground scene in 2004, he made history by being the first unsigned artist to have a video appear on MTV UK’s ‘TRL’. 2006 saw his first album ‘It’s Not A Rumour’ drop with trance-sampling smash single ‘Shakespeare’ being play-listed and championed on BBC’s Radio 1 via the support of influential DJ, Zane Lowe. The album received critical acclaim and earned Akala the ‘Best Hip Hop Artist’ award at the 2006 MOBO awards, beating out Kanye West. Reflecting the disorder and flux of contemporary life, Akala’s second album ‘Freedom Lasso’ was an energetic visionary essay on modern life, drawing influences from the whole spectrum of music – rap, rock, electro and punk. Summer 2010 see’s Akala return, poised to flip-turn the UK music scene once again with his third effort: DoubleThink.

It's not often that an album comes along that shares debts to Radiohead, Aphex Twin and Depeche Mode as strongly as to Public Enemy, the Wu-Tang Clan and The Fugees. This artist, label-owner and social-entrepreneur made it his life's work to challenge preconceptions and buck prevailing trends; refusing to be squeezed into any kind of mould. Akala was the first rapper of this new generation of hip hoppers to seriously experiment with multiple genres. DoubleThink proves he has now fused them into his own inimitable cohesive sound – it’s as if Wu-Tang, Prodigy and Rage Against The Machine all got together for a musical orgy and out screamed Akala. Breaking down the culture of cliché and stereotypes that smothers the genre is a major part of his mission, giving impetus to this collection of pointed, perceptive hip hop music from a convention-defying emcee.

DoubleThink is partly a concept album inspired by the three classic novels of dystopian fiction: George Orwell's ‘1984’, Aldous Huxley's ‘Brave New World’ and Yevgeny Zamyatin's ‘We’. The record takes its overall tone – the edgy paranoia, sizzling menace and spine-tingling tension – from these literary classics and transmutes it into musical form. From Welcome to Dystopia's static-laden distortion to Peace's simple, sparse piano accompaniment (a collaboration with the classical pianist Paul Gladstone Reid, MBE) provides musical and atmospheric contrast to the juddering electro-rooted rap that sits either side of it, via the electro-funk keyboards and metal guitar riffs of Faceless People, the breadth of musical ambition is matched by the rich variety of topics Akala addresses.

Race, politics and social conditioning are among the recurring themes presented as barbed comedic satire. In tackling those topics Akala finds himself confronting the issue of the decline of hip hop as a social and political force, angrily restating the genre's credentials as the best, most powerful means of delivering what KRS-ONE calls Edutainment.

Edutainment is a familiar concept to Akala: releasing music on his own Illa State record label, he’s established a highly effective model – from producing music and videos in-house, to creating an impressive (BT Digital Music Award-nominated) online presence, touring and merchandise strategy. He also quenches his thirst for spreading knowledge by launching The Hip-hop Shakespeare Company in 2009, the hotly-tipped music theatre production education company. His prowess at communicating effectively with young people has resulted in collaborations with Arts Council, London 2012, the National Youth Theatre and numerous appearances on BBC2’s “Newsnight Review”.

Akala, alongside his renowned drummer, Cassell “The Beatmaker” have developed a reputation for stellar live performances. Having supported M.I.A., Christina Aguilera, Jay-Z, Richard Ashcroft, DJ Shadow and Siouxsie Sue on their U.K. tours, headlined three full UK/European tours, numerous festival appearances including (Glastonbury, Wireless and V Festival) and played venues at 2008’s SXSW. Akala has also had numerous T.V. performances on T4 and BBC2, worked with the British Council promoting British culture abroad, performing a series of concerts in Nigeria and in Vietnam as the first-ever hip hop artist to perform live.

The Strange Death Of Liberal England On Tour

The Strange Death Of Liberal England

11th Oct – Leeds, Milo
25th Oct – London, The Lexington
27th Oct – Birmingham, The Flapper
28th Oct – Manchester, Ruby Lounge

2008, London. Producer Dave Allen (The Cure, Depeche Mode) notices a copy of the debut mini album from Southsea’s The Strange Death Of Liberal England in a record shop. Intrigued by the name and the sleeve art of the record, designed by bass player Kelly Jones, he makes his purchase and falls in love with what he hears.

2008, Southsea. The five members of The Strange Death Of Liberal England are in a strange place. Having seen press acclaim for their debut mini album, ‘Forward March!’ and played the expected tours and festivals they reach a creative impasse as their former label, Fantastic Plastic, retrenches. From nowhere Dave Allen contacts them and they arrange to work together with no clear and obvious path to follow. The seeds of their debut album, ‘Drown Your Heart Again’ are sown.

The first fruits of this relationship are a limited single, ‘Angelou’, and an initially fraught creative relationship that sees the producer declare their proposed album tracks ‘hopeless’ in the main as tempers fray. Yet Allen’s belief that the band are capable of greatness cuts through the tension and the band react by listening to his advice to de-complicate the songs with key writers Adam Woolway and William Charlton re-writing existing songs and creating new tracks which, on presentation, get the producer’s seal of approval. From the glorious naivety of their debut release, the band move forward several gears, believing that their strong melodies and undoubted creative abilities can prosper without the attendant sloganeering and deliberate musical intellectualising that had been a large part of their oeuvre to that point. Choruses are embraced, song structures are formalised, attention is paid to the song rather than the concept.

This being The Strange Death Of Liberal England, a band driven by a love of the likes of The Cure, The Smiths and other acts that balanced pop with deeper meaning, the concept still has a place and the first sign of that is an audacious decision for the unsigned band to play a sit down theatre show with a full orchestra. A meeting in a pub between keyboardist and band philosopher Andrew Wright and local youth orchestra leader Richard P Horn leads to this one off, sold out show at the New Theatre Royal at which many of the new songs are premiered and the circle of thinking for the album is complete. As with many of the relationships that create ‘Drown Your Heart Again’, the orchestra give their time for free, becoming part of a community that will, in combination, deliver this most unique of debut albums.

With producer and full orchestra in place, Portsmouth once again delivers as local recording facility, The Old Blacksmith’s Studio, offers the band time gratis to make the album. In a nice piece of extra community feeling, this is where the band’s career began having won studio time there in a local battle of the bands competition that went on to become their debut EP. Allen drives his camper van down to the South Coast and for three weeks the producer of, amongst other things, The Cure’s all conquering ‘Disintegration’, camps out and shares in the cheap pizzas cooked in his van’s oven that fuel the sessions. From nowhere in 2008 to a completed album at the opening of 2010, the unsigned band have created a community of like minds to deliver an album that pools the talents of all to create an orchestral pop record of quite dazzling melody, lyricism and overall feel.

It seems appropriate that at the heart of the album is a sense of community and an overriding desire to scale musical peaks. The members of the band have been their own self sustaining community since meeting in Gosport, Hants, as teenagers. As singer Adam Woolway explains, it’s the kind of place that throws together anyone outside the local ‘norm’, the kind of place immediately recognisable to anyone born outside of the major cities of the UK:

‘We learnt to play by forming the band. Gosport was the kind of place where, if you like our kind of music and look like we do, you were thrown together, the idea of safety in numbers transcended age’.

The album itself would not be as it is without the band’s now home town of Southsea, a stone’s throw from Portsmouth. Whilst Adam’s lyrics do not draw specifically on the area, the juxtaposition of the seemingly endless expanse of the sea visible from his living room window and the lights of the city inhabit the songs throughout the album. Searchlights of lost friends flicker from offshore to the South East (‘Flickering Light’), ‘waves like armies on horseback’ backdrop a sun sinking behind the buildings on ‘Flagships’, the endless sea and the captive sun in combination or conflict, ships in the night become a metaphor for unseen lives (‘Shadows’) as the album builds a lyrical tableau where nature becomes a palliative for the blows of life in the city as Adam explains:

‘For me, there has always been something 'spiritual' to the sea. It’s a place where people surrender their emotions, like a confession, literally leaving them behind. As well as a boundary and an ear for melancholy and loneliness, however, the sea is also a place of happiness, of nature, and of freedom and escapism. It is this contradiction that I have tried to convey in my lyrics across the album. The album is not about a particular event but the human emotions that all stare back at you when you look out from Southsea beach in the middle of the night.’

In their expropriation of sea shanty on their debut mini album and again here on the ship’s horn that announces the album’s title track, the harmonium on ‘Autumn’ or the album closer ‘Dog Barking At The Moon’ replete with elegant, mournful brass that ebbs and flows like the tides, the sea excerpts a huge influence on the music whilst title’s like ‘Flagships’, ‘Rising Sea’, ‘Lighthouse’ and the album title itself make the connection between the band and location explicit.

From nowhere and despondency in 2008 to now it has been a strange journey indeed. Along the way, the making of ‘Drown Your Heart Again’ has seen the five piece band become a community endeavour, a meeting of like minds and like hearts to create an album that flows like the sea that stands as its major influence. As with all albums there are plenty of odd moments, the theft of Dave Allen’s camper van and its use in a car bombing of a Nissan garage in High Wycombe, the abandoned Victorian coastal fort that houses the Richard P Horn Youth Orchestra but, as with the band’s new found desire for focus, these are beside the point. The Strange Death Of Liberal England are no longer complicated. They are effortless, simple, brilliant, beautiful pop and ‘Drown Your Heart Again’ is the purest evidence of that for which anyone could wish.

Following the departure of founder member and guitarist Marc Norris earlier in the year the band have now appointed Dominic Knight as a permanent replacement.

On October 11th Eighties Matchbox release a new single, ‘So Long, Goodnight’, taken from their third album ‘Blood and Fire’ released earlier this year to great acclaim, after a six year hiatus. The single on Black Records, will be available on vinyl and as a download

‘So Long, Goodnight’ is the band’s first ever ballad.
“To me it really reminds me of the whole Beat Generation mentality,” frontman Guy McKnight explains, “and how that filtered down through folk, someone like Bob Dylan, which then transformed into rock music and how that whole beat generation philosophy is basically a strain of proto-punk. ‘So Long, Goodnight’ reminds me of a road movie. It’s definitely an anti-hero ballad.”

“'Blood + Fire' is a barefoot stomp over the members of the past, it's one helluva triumphant resurrection”. The Fly 4/5

“An album which might well claw back the band's crown as Britain's premier purveyors of filthy, black-hearted rock 'n roll.” Artrocker 4/5

“This album is a dark-hearted joy and reinstalls the band as the UK's premier proponents of psychobilly-punk.” Kerrang 4/5

“Absorbing on an almost parasitic level.” NME 7/10

“It's brilliantly inventive and heralds a terrific return from a great band.” Loud+ Quiet 8/10

“Few bands are as unique as Eighties Matchbox and even fewer are as consistent, this is another triumph for the Brighton mob.” Rocksound 8/10

“The longer the EMBLD defy the whims of fashion and refuse to die, the more they feel like a minor national treasure.” The Independent on Sunday

“South Coast swamp rockers return with a vengeance.” Uncut 4/5

Nine months young and already making a stir in the UK scene, Feed The Rhino blend catchy groove based riffs with passionate raw vocals.

Hailing from the south of England, singer Lee Tobin, guitarists Sam Colley and James Colley, bassist Oz Craggs and drummer Chris Kybert, have already begun leaving an impact throughout due to their outstanding live shows.

Pure rock and roll with hints of hardcore here and there, Feed The Rhino are making their mark and defining a sound they can call their own.

The James Cleaver Quintet are four of the raddest of rad dudes, sent from the future to rock you 'til you get rocked!

The south coast punks may be called a quintet but there are only four band members, Jack Swagger (vocals and sampler), Maud E. Licious (guitar and vocals), Jimmy Diego (bass and vocals) and Mackerel Skarrington (drums and cymbals).

Thrash Hits has described them best as: “A shot of hardcore punk slammed into a pint full of thrashing experimental chaos with melodies that leave you wanting more until inevitably, it knocks you on your arse.”

After having already played seventy-three dates across the UK and Europe supporting the legendary Joan Armtrading during 2010, Lisbee Stainton returns with her new single, ‘Harriet’.

Released on September 20th to coincide with the UK leg of her tour, ‘Harriet’ is the latest single to be taken from 22-year old Lisbee’s critically acclaimed album ‘Girl On An Unmade Bed’, which was recorded at Abbey Road in the legendary Beatles Studio 2 with producer Rupert Christie (U2, Kate Bush, Coldplay, Lou Reed) and was released to much critical acclaim in March this year.

Unusually, Lisbee wrote ‘Harriet’ in order to get some peace. “When I was at University my friend Harriet kept hassling me to write a song about her. In the end I did just so she’d stop going on about it,” Lisbee explained. “I’m sure Harriet will be shocked when she finds out she’s now the subject of my new single. That’ll teach her!”

The single’s B-side, ‘Follow’ was recorded as a tribute to the work of Peace One Day and has since been chosen for United Nations Peace Day on September 21st 2010.

Known as The English Rose with the 8-String Guitar, London-based Lisbee launched her career when she became the first unsigned singer-songwriter to play London’s O2 Arena, performing to a 30,000 strong audience. BBC 6Music DJ Tom Robinson then asked Lisbee for a copy of her song ‘Red’ after hearing it on her MySpace page. This then led to ‘Red’ being playlisted by BBC Radio 2 at the beginning of 2009 for five weeks.

Lisbee has since had the single ‘Never Quite An Angel’ playlisted by Radio 2 for six weeks, had another single, ‘Just Like Me’, voted ‘Record of The Week’ on Radio 2’s Radcliffe & Maconie Show and played live sessions for BBC 6 Music and BBC Radio London’s Robert Elms Show. In addition, Lisbee’s set at Bristol’s Colton Hall during the Joan Armatrading tour was broadcast as part of BBC Radio 2’s ‘In Concert’ series.

Lisbee also appeared alongside stars such as Katie Melua and Judy Garland on a new compilation called ‘Latest and Greatest Women of Song’, released on Union Square Records in July 2010.

Speaking about her forthcoming tour, Lisbee said, “I made a lot of friends across the UK & Europe during the tour with Joan Armatrading, so it’s exciting to be invited back to so many of the same towns and cities with my own headline show.”

By the end of 2010 Lisbee Stainton will have spent over six months of the year on tour, cementing her reputation as not just one of the UK’s brightest songwriting talents but also one of the UK’s hardest working. Stainton added, “I’m doing it the old way, the hard way, winning new fans one by one.”

It's not often you can say a band is unique without seeming deluded or misguided, one listen to psychedelic/folk Glaswegians Haight-Ashbury and it's easy to see they really are such a band.

Wheter it's their haunting twin vocals, unusual live set up or their habit of writing a brilliant baroque pop song and then smashing it to pieces, creating a noise that can change fromm beautiful to surreal in an instant.

Live, they play with no amplifiers but still manage to create a huge sound from just a few instruments, a sound that one music critic described as if the Velvet Underground were the Mamas And The Papas backing band… ok, with a bit of Joni Mitchell, Jesus and Mary Chain, CSN&Y and Pentangle thrown in.

Thursday 16 September – The Ruby Lounge, Manchester
Friday 17 September – The Flapper, Birmingham

The Brute Chorus have been combining garage, blues and folk music with a scatology of Biblical stories, nursery rhymes and fairy tales since 2008. Their enormously accessible sound has managed to escape any generalised genre pigeon-holing, instead they’ve been carving out their own genuine, word-of-mouth buzz from their exciting live shows.

They beegn taking it to the people with a monthly residency at Camden’s infamous Hawley Arms pub. The band’s first releases, charming offerings of psyched-out garage-folk we’e put out on the Hawley Arms backed Bumpman records to widespread aclaim from Steve Lamacq, Zane Lowe, NME, The Fly amongst others.

The scuzzy blues-folk quartet took their splendidly raucous live shows on the road with a host of festivals apperances including Glastonbury, Camden Crawl, Great Escape, Secret Garden Party, Belladrum, Standon & Kendal Calling. As well as touring with the likes of Martha Wainwright, Rumble Strips, Ida Maria and even a trip to the seaside with Peggy Sue and The Pirates as well as numerous headline UK and European shows.

This led to the recording of the Brute Chorus debut album. In one heartstopping take infront of 300 of their most loyal fans at The Roundhouse’s FreeDM studios. They begged, borrowed and stole equipment from the likes of Rod Stewart, Lionel Richie and then with shaky hands, sweaty brows and a quick swig of JD they were all set to record… They inlisted producers Victor Van Vugt (Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Gogol Bordello and Son’s and Daughters) and the Mercury nominated Choque Hosein (Black Star Liner, Hood, Lord Auch). Holed up for 5 weeks in their rehearsal residency above a Hackney pub, they practicied solidly to ensure the recording would be a success.

The album came out packaged in a attractive and collectable wooden sleeve hand-made by the band. It received a host of 5 star reviews from Clash, Artrocker, BBC and Drowned in Sound amongst others.

The Brute Chorus quietly slipped back under the radar just before Christmas, reducing their usually frenetic gigging schedule to a couple of secret shows and DJ sets in tiny locations with the likes of Good Shoes. Well now the band are ready to break cover, armed with a recording contract with East London indie label Tape, a new album in the bag and a host of shows to play across France, Germany, England and Scotland. The Brutes are back.

Having spent a snowy January recording in a tiny village hall in the depths of the Lake District the boys have returned to their native metropolis of London to prepare for the first of their 2010 engagements: a short jaunt through Europe beginning with a show in Paris with Reverand & The Makers followed by five dates in Germany with reformed cult alt rockers The Woodentops. No strangers to touring on a budget, the band have decided to travel via interail in the hope they’ll be able to squeeze in a bit of tourism between shows.

Back on Albion’s shores in early March the Brute Chorus will took a two week road trip offering British fans their first opportunity to hear material from their new album due for release late this summer. The first single from the album ‘Could This Be Love?’ was released late April, accompanied by a typically off-kilter video. Keep an eye out for The Brutes at a festival near by this summer!

Rachael Sage
13th September @ Mello Mello, Liverpool
14th September @ Jabez Clegg, Manchester

The outstanding musicianship of critically acclaimed, award winning US singer – songwriter and producer Rachael Sage, returns to the UK in the form of an album of superior class and quality – ‘Delancey Street’. Released on September 13 and her ninth album to date Delancey St will be preceded by the art-rock/folk/pop – and soon to be summer smash – ‘Big Star’ on August 30.

Weaving ‘beyond-her-years’ lyrical wisdom within deliciously enjoyable melodies, Rachael Sage uses music as her canvass, painting a vivid picture of everyday life and emotions within her ancestral and current home, New York’s Lower East Side. ‘Delancey Street’ is a melodic exploration of an individual’s identity, delving into the chasms of cultural family history, heritage and how our roots shape our destiny. After over a decade of living a migrant existence, Sage finally decided to re-establish her foundations, balance her life and solidify her relationships and ‘Delancey Street’ is where she discovered her true grounding – it’s the ‘coming home’ of her inner musical expression.

Enveloping velvety smooth Kate Bush-esque vocals, within a unique art-rock/folk/pop fusion, ‘Delancey Street’, delivers 13 snap-shots of beautifully articulated life experiences, conveyed with overwhelming heartfelt sentiment from the very emotive Ms Sage. iTunes commented, “At the core of Delancey Street is a heartfelt quality that goes beyond intellectual exercise”. Eleven of these tracks are original lyrical pennings and compositions by Rachael Sage, with the twelfth song being a delicate and sensitive cover of the Hall & Oates classic, ‘Rich Girl’.

‘Delancey Street’, is Rachael Sage’s ninth album release to date, and arguably her most inspired. Mixed by Grammy Winner, Kevin Killen (Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush) and recorded by longtime accomplice, John Shyloski (Stephen Kellogg, Johnny Winter), the album also features Rachael’s long-time touring band, The Sequins.
