Jeannine Barry: Live In London

Jeannine Barry: Live In London

Glasswerk is proud to present country singer-songwriter Jeannine Barry. From an early age rising UK Country artist, Jeannine Barry knew music was in her soul and that her destiny was to be a performer entertaining audiences the world over. Jeannine will be playing The Slaughtered Lamb on the 5th August, for tickets click on the link below

However, it wasn’t until many years later, under the vocal tutorage of David Lee Brewer (Beyonce, Kelly Rowland) that Jeannine fully realised that the music so engrained in her soul was country music and that the path she would follow would eventually lead her to Nashville, Tennessee. Jeannine says ‘The faith David had in me gave me the confidence to look deep inside myself so I could realize my full potential as the artist that I am. It was a difficult process at first as everything I was hearing around me was pop or R&B or rock and I couldn’t see where country would fit in. But I knew it was the path I wanted to follow and it set me off on this magical journey I am still travelling today.’

With a burning ambition and desire to perform Jeannine returned to London and set about trying to establish herself on the UK Country scene. It was initially a tough time but hard work, determination and positivity soon led to Jeannine being offered small gigs which in turn led to bigger gigs as her support base grew.

Towards the end of 2012, Jeannine felt the time was right for her to go into the studio and record some of the material she was playing live. This resulted in her debut EP ‘Give Me Something’. Its release further cemented Jeannine’s growing reputation and led to a number of prestigious support slots in London (incl. Katie Armiger, Jill & Kate, Ben Taylor), festival appearances including the very popular C2C festival at the O2 Arena as well as impressive headline shows of her own.

Not content Jeannine knew that 2015 was going to be a special year and set about making plans to follow her dream and head to Nashville to record a new EP. With an array of Nashville’s top musicians on hand to support and guide her, Jeannine went into the studio during April 2015 and the songs from these sessions were released on her new EP ‘Off The Hook’ in July 2015. The freedom and confidence Jeannine now possesses is evident throughout ‘Off The Hook’ as it brings together a number of different styles to provide her audience with the clearest indication yet that Jeannine is a country star on the rise.

After spending some more time in Nashville to promote the EP in July, Jeannine is now back in the UK and is getting ready to play some headline shows and is working on new music for the next release. There are some really exciting projects coming up so make sure you join the mailing list today to be kept up to date!
In Jeannine’s own words ‘I want to do what I know I came here for and I want inspire and touch others with my music, make a positive difference in this world and give others a sense of hope. Music has always been what has kept me going and if I can do that for anyone then I’m happy.’

Andy McKee: Live UK Tour

Andy McKee: Live UK Tour

Glasswerk is proud to present YouTube phenomenon Andy McKee, Becoming one of the first major viral video’s on YouTube, Andy McKee amazed the public with his incredible compositions and ability to effortlessly sweep, pick and pluck strings. You can catch Andy McKee live on the following dates:

December [Click on dates for tickets]

11 – Gorilla Manchester
13 – Komedia Brighton
16 – Liverpool Philharmonic [Music Room]
17 – Holy Trinity Leeds
18 – Glee Club Birmingham

Andy McKee’s acoustic guitar can approximate the polyrhythmic interplay of a percussion ensemble, the harmonic sweep of a string section, the dazzling runs of a bluegrass doghouse bass-and-banjo duo, and virtually anything else his pastoral compositions and tasteful covers require. In 9 years and 5 records he’s written an oeuvre that globally inspires and intrigues music fans. His robust 200 dates-a-year tour itinerary—often spanning domestic rural to the exotically remote, from Arizona to Zimbabwe and everything in between—and his fans-first commitment, make him a worldwide ambassador for a new era in acoustic virtuosity.

Andy’s imaginative and masterful approach to the instrument and his Guitar Masters tour franchise—a tour package of edgy progressives—is helping to redefine our conception of acoustic guitar. Recently he’s garnered plum exposure touring with Dream Theater (where he played to 10,000 in Mexico City) and Eric Johnson (who made a rare acoustic showing on the Guitar Masters Tour) where he’s been able to share his unique artistry with a wide and diverse audience. Fans of sophisticated holiday music had the opportunity to hear Andy on Josh Groban’s Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum Christmas album, Noël. In December 2008 Andy was awarded Acoustic Guitar Magazine’s esteemed worldwide silver medal award for his fingerstyle approach. But most fans first exposure to Andy’s guitartistry has been through his youtube presence; the Topeka Kansas native’s 100 million cumulative youtube views puts him in the top 3 most viewed subjects on the site’s storied 7-year history. Youtube, and video culture in general, tends to have a shtick-based popularity where humorous and superficial images tend to attract the most attention. That a guy with just an acoustic guitar and no fancy camera work or special effects could resonate with that many people is inspiring in that it showed there is a powerful and widespread hunger for pure and progressive musicianship.

This year Andy will embark on 3 somewhat simultaneous tours. He will head back out with Dream Theater, hitting South Korea, Indonesia, and Japan. He will play arena shows with Prince in Australia as a special guest and directly accompany Prince through the catalog of many of his hits. His solo Pale Blue Tour will cover many parts of the planet. In all, Andy will be playing in America, Brazil, Zimbabwe, Singapore, Mexico City, France, England, Austria, Germany, and Switzerland, China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Russia, and India. And Guitar Masters will reach the UK, France, Germany, and Switzerland. It’s a daunting itinerary. But Andy takes the dates day by day, with nose-to-the-grindstone D.I.Y. ethos like hauling his own gear, maintaining his own equipment, and always being accessible after shows. Andy’s shows have a homespun intimacy, hiss stage demeanor is warm and witty and he’s always generous with revealing his unique conception of the acoustic guitar to his fans.

His masterful expressionism on the guitar includes exotic tunings for rich resonance, drones for mystical ambience, complex polyrhythmic percussion, slap and pop funk bass dynamics, and a tasteful two-hand tap technique that’s unique in that it favors percussion and expansive harmonic capabilities verses show-off licks. His vision extends beyond standard instrumentation and Andy has been fortunate enough to have endorsements from a number of forward-thinking luthiers like Greenfield fanned fret guitars, Lance McCollum Baritone Guitar, and Ron Spillers Harp Guitars to build him instruments and him realize his exotic and complex musicality. His chops are compositionally- derived, his art necessitated his technique, and this approach has an emotional resonance and purity lacking in many guitar virtuosos where chops are for peacocking the audience.

Andy is a self-taught musician who grew up studying cassettes and CDs of artists as diverse as Preston Reed, Don Ross, Billy McLaughlin, and Michael Hedges, Eric Johnson, and Dream Theater. Interesting enough, his slap and pop technique is inspired by Earth Wind & Fire’s bassist Verdine White. He also absorbed the sophisticatedly accessible work of 1980s icons like Toto and Tears For Fears. His compositions and imaginative technique are an amalgamated conception of these disparate aesthetics—the chops-y journeys of guitar masters, the irreverent genius of the modern acoustic wizards, and the creative and hooky compositional and arrangement sense of good 1980s pop. Andy writes with rich impressionistic chords that often evoke beautiful country landscapes. He arranges with a keen understanding of dynamics and how songs have to feel transporting to have emotional currency. And he’s been able to confidently apply his concepts to playfully sincere renditions of pop standards such as Tears For Fears “Everybody Wants To Rule The World,” Toto’s “Africa,” and even a refreshingly rustic rendition of “Stairway To Heaven”.

He started his professional career like many musicians as a guitar teacher before his careerlaunching appearance at the venerated National Finger Style Guitar Championships in Winfield, Kansas where he was a top finalist. From that platform he went on to be a recording artist, and sticking close to his indie ideals, he’s managed to sell 50,000 records. He’s also sold thousands of hand-transcribed folio books to those who want to study his music in a more intimate and scholarly way.

Andy is currently building the Guitar Masters Tour brand, a franchise that seeks to combine technically masterful acoustic guitar performances with artist’s workshop accessibility for an engaging and participatory fan experience. His current CD/DVD package, Joyland (Razor & Tie, 2010), has a cinematic feel often conjuring up abandoned theme parks though it also features his trademark pastoral compositional style. The album is a breakthrough as he tastefully expanded his artistic palette through adding drums and cello in select places, showcasing his scoring capabilities outside the guitar-centric realm. The DVD component has an instructional bend with Andy’s trademark candor and wit as he takes the viewer through his musical journey and generously reveals tunings and techniques, bringing the guitar fan close for intimate masterclass performances of the new standards on Joyland.

Beth Rowley

Beth Rowley is an English Blues and Soul singer and songwriter. Following a successful introduction in 2008, signing to Universal and releasing her UK top 10 album Little Dreamer, which sold over 90,000 albums in UK and for which she was nominated for a Brit Award, Beth new album out this year has been much anticipated by fans and critics alike.

Beth acknowledges early influences from Gospel Spirituals, Soul and Blues inherited from her parents who brought Beth and her 3 siblings up on Led Belly, Mahalia Jackson, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and later vocalists like Ella Fitzgerald, Emmy Lou Harris and Bonnie Raitt. Beth is a rare talent and seeing her live is a must to appreciate her immense vocal talent and individuality.

Beth has appeared on stage with some giants of the music world including Burt Bacharach, David Arnold (James Bond), and as Angelo Badalamenti’s personal guest with Susie Sioux (David Lynch’s right hand man) at Ghent film Festival. Beth also performed at Willie Nelsons 4th July Back Yard Festival in Austin alongside Ray Wylie Hubbard and has shared the bill with Adele, Carleen Anderson and Jamie Cullum. When Beth isn’t performing her own music she tours as guest vocalist with Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra.

Samuel Jack

“I was raised by the sounds and the words of redemption song.”

Samuel Jack. A unique, intelligent and emotive storyteller with a rugged soulful vocal that commands the room. Raised on a diet of Blues, Motown, soul and roots music, Samuel was born in London, before moving to Johannesburg at the age of 12.
Now settled in Dorset, writing and recording in a caravan, Samuel is releasing his debut EP later in the year. The songs on the EP were refined on the battered piano in his local pub, often in front of the regulars in return for a tab; Samuel was literally singing for his supper.

“I’m a poor man, with a rich mind.”

Last year Samuel Jack had the privilege of opening The Avalon Stage at Glastonbury Festival and he’s been wowing audiences at a string of private clubs in Los Angeles & London. It’s all a far cry from Samuel’s worst live experience at an ‘off grid’ festival, where the stage amps were powered by bicycle.
This year Samuel will be appearing at a special Sofar Sounds show on May 15th, as well as performing at the Innocent Unplugged Festival with more dates still to be confirmed.
Recently championed by BBC Introducing, Samuel has also had his music featured on a number of US TV shows, including most recently Nashville, Satisfaction, About A Boy and Grimm.

Award Winning Canadian Artist Lynne Hanson Live In London

Award Winning Canadian Artist Lynne Hanson Live In London

The critically acclaimed Canadian “rough around the edge folk” artist Lynne Hanson will be arriving with us in July to showcase her raw songwriting talents with the UK, Lynne will playing in Surya, London on the 7th July be sure to catch her live!

One of Canada’s most acclaimed musicians arrives on these shores to celebrate her recent album ‘River of Sand’ – a release that was widely considered the only roots rock record of 2014 to hold a candle to Rosanne Cash’s “The River and the Thread.” And she’s certainly up there with Ms Cash – Hanson’s songs are like a favourite pair of jeans, faded and worn through in spots, with a bit of honestly-acquired grit ground into the seams. Long-praised for her raw, confessional songwriting, the new material displays a whole new level of artistic courage. This is great music with integrity, soul and not a little brio.

“Somewhere in the heartlands, in a town called ‘Americana USA,’ nestles a particular variety of singer-songwriter. Someone who views a melodic sensibility through the bottom of a whiskey glass. Canadian songstress Lynne Hanson could run for mayor of that town.” Trevor Raggatt – R2 Magazine (5 stars)

“The least of the songs are superior to much I’ve heard this year while the cream of the crop is just stunning at times.” Paul Kerr – Americana-UK (9/10)

2010 Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award
2009 Canadian Folk Music Award Nominee
2009 Kerrville New Folk Finalist
2008 Mountain Stage New Song Regional Finalist
2006 OCFF “Songs from the Heart” Blues Award

Some have referred to her music as Americana, roots, and rough-around-the-edges folk, but Canadian songwriter Lynne Hanson prefers “porch music with a little red dirt.” Hanson songs are like a favourite pair of jeans. They’re rough around the edges, faded and worn through in spots, with a bit of honestly-acquired dirt ground into the seams.

Hanson grew up in Ottawa Canada, and starting playing guitar when she was 14, learning on a hand-me-down from her older brother. She released her award-winning debut album Things I Miss in 2006, and with many tales to tell, two more albums quickly followed: Eleven Months (2008) and Once the Sun Goes Down (2010). Each new release garnered critical praise, earning Hanson a Canadian Folk Music Award nomination in 2009, an invitation to the Kerrville Folk Festival as a New Folk Finalist, and a year later the prestigious Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award handed out annually by the Ontario Arts Council.

Then … silence. A four-year hiatus from recording. Lynne took some time to take control of her personal life which also marked the beginning of a new approach to songwriting. Her fourth studio album River of Sand is the creative output of that very personal journey.

On River Of Sand she’s been fortunate to work with Juno-winning songstress Lynn Miles as producer. “The songs on this record are honest and fearless” says Miles. It’s still as Hanson has always described it, but there’s a little more dirt and the dirt is just a little bit darker. No topic is off limits, and the 11 songs run the gamut, painting a candid canvas of whiskey-soaked heartbreak and personal struggle, all contrasted against hope that better times are coming.

Her songs may be full of grit, but Hanson’s live performances are polished, whether she’s playing solo or with her band The Good Intentions. And she’s managed to get around, having toured Canada, the US, Europe and the UK. She’s played showcase gigs in Austin, Phoenix and Memphis (Folk Alliance), toured in support of Grammy nominated songwriters (Gretchen Peters, Steve Forbert), and performed at several historic music venues, including the legendary 100 Club in London England and the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville.

“Alongside the terrific songs and fabulous production the actual product is one of the most graphically arresting album sleeves of 2015” – Rudie Humphrey | Americana UK 9/10
“She’s made the only roots rock record of 2014 to hold a candle to Rosanne Cash’s “The River and the Thread.” Michael Barclay – The Cambridge Times

“Lynne Hanson is a hard-driving performer, who assumes true ownership of her music and she’s gooooood … she had the crowd mesmerized!” Elaina Martin, Founder and Producer, Westfest

Mamas Gun

You must buy the Mamas Gun Album” (Peter Gabriel)

No doubt – they’re amazing!” (Brian May of Queen)

Mamas Gun are a musically diverse, feisty and fabulous five-piece band fronted by singer/composer/producer ANDY PLATTS. Andy is joined by keyboard player DAVE “EIGHTIES” OLIVER who’s musical education has embraced everything from barbershop singing to French horn and now includes jazz, soul and Cuban playing. Alongside stand out guitarist TERRY “SPILLER” LEWIS who studied music in London and now resides on UK’s south coast and who’s musical journey has seen him work with legendary Marvin Gaye/Minnie Ripperton/Michael Jackson producer Leon Ware, Lewis Taylor, The Impressions (the late Curtis Mayfield’s former group), Jamie Woon, The Valentine Brothers, Jean Carne to name a few. “UNION” JACK POLLITT on drums is a highly in demand musician who notably played drums on ‘Green Light’ for Beyoncé’s ‘B-Day’ album with producer Pharrell Williams. And newest addition to the MG unit CAMERON ‘the Mounty’ DAWSON is the youngest at only 21 years old but already an old soul in his musical capability and contributions to the energetic and memorable stage shows that Mamas Gun never fail to deliver.

In October 2009 Mamas Gun released their debut album Routes To Riches. Co-produced by Julian Simmons (Ed Sheeran/Guillemots), mixed by Grammy Award-winning producer/engineer Jack Joseph Puig (Black Eyed Peas, U2, the Rolling Stones) and mastered by the equally notable Bob Ludwig, Routes To Riches manages to combine the euphoria of soul and Motown music with the spirit of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Lewis Taylor and the Average White Band at their blue-eyed-soul best. The record is also all about musical enjoyment and nothing to do with the fleets of fashion and this “philosophy” has obviously already hit a nerve as the band have achieved play-list status for their first two singles on the BBC Radio 2 & enjoyed an Album Of The Week feature on the Smooth radio network. More interestingly perhaps, Mamas Gun are currently having a huge impact in Japan where they were heralded as the most played international act in the country, beating Madonna to No. 1 in the airplay charts whilst doing so. The band also managed to achieve the No.3 sales slot on the Japanese Billboard charts.

Sultan Of The Disco

Inspired by Soul/ Funk music from the golden age of disco represented as Chic, Kool and the Gang and Jackson 5, Korean indie band ‘Sultan of the Disco’ plays to deliver vintage sound to modern listeners. The band was named after the song of Dire Straits “Sultan of Swing’. Members include Nahzam Sue(lead vocals), J.J Hassan(dance, performance), Ganji Kim(drums), G(bass), and Hong-gi(guitar).

It’s Nahzam’s priority to inherit the vintage disco sound directly from the 60s~70s soul and funk masters, while sexy, unique group dancing is purely on J.J. Hassan, who spent more than enough years on the dance floor. Through cool, yet fun costume that befits the visual, the band combines musical seriousness and entertainment altogether. The band released its first full album ‘The Golden Age (2013)’. With the title clearly revealing ambition to inherit soul/funk masters, the album was an exceptional hit. It got nominated as Korea Music Award’s the best dance/electronic album and recorded highest sales abroad in Summer Sonic Festival in Japan, among 40 or more artists who played at the same zone.
Yet, Sultan of the Disco’s popularity most owed it to the band’s flaming performance. Whoever watches their show can’t help dancing with them. In Glastonbury festival, people in their zone danced along and repeated lyrics in unknown language. That resulted in very rare and enthusiastic calls of “One-more-song!”. For Grammy winning producer, Tony Maserati, he saw Sultan of the Disco playing at music market showcase and decided to work with them, right away.

Now, Sultan of the Disco is ready for next step with upcoming single ‘SQ (We Don’t Need No EQ IQ)’ produced by Grammy-winning producer Tony Maserati. And they’ve proved their music appealed to global audience at Canadian Music Week and CMJ Music Marathon in 2015.

Nell Bryden: Live In Manchester

Nell Bryden: Live In Manchester

Glasswerk is proud to present singer songwriter Nell bryden live in Manchester, you can catch her live on the 17th May in Gorilla.

Following the enormous success of her last single “All You Had”, (her most successful single ever at radio) Nell’s third album “Wayfarer” released on 7th July 2014, accompanied by the radio single of the same name, “Wayfarer”.

Like its predecessor, “Wayfarer” finds Nell continuing her creative journey further into the world of rhythmic and electronic pop. Stylistically, “Wayfarer” is inspired by Fleetwood Mac, but with Nell’s soaring vocals reminiscent of classic Annie Lennox in her “Diva” heyday. The new single “Wayfarer” was written with “All You Had” co-writer Dario Darnell and new and hotly tipped songwriter Dave Gibson, and produced by Dario Darnell and Lorne Ashley Brigham Bowes (AKA Bicker Bros).

After 18 months promoting and touring her second album “Shake The Tree”, Nell has spent the last year writing and experimenting with her songwriting and music, and finally settled on a stylistic direction for her next album in autumn 2013. Whittling down 25 demos to a dozen songs, and encouraged by the reception of “All You Had” at radio, Nell worked largely with Bicker Bros to craft a new sound for the album, combining electronic beats with live instruments and her trademark Gibson guitar.

In between album writing and production duties, Nell has kept doing what she does best, playing live. In the last two years she’s performed 110 shows in UK, Europe and USA, most recently supporting Gipsy Kings on their Europe and UK tour, including her fourth performance at Royal Albert Hall, London, in a little over a year.

Nell also supported Gary Barlow on his first major solo UK tour for over a decade in 2012/13, and has been the support artist on major tours with Jools Holland, Chris Rea and Duane Eddy, alongside high profile Festival performances such as V Festival, Cornbury, Hyde Park, Guilfest and Bluesfest.

Alongside her album release in July, Nell will be performing at festivals over the summer, ahead of a UK headline tour in October. Nell is confirmed to perform at Chris Evan’s Carfest in August, the Milton Keynes International Festival in July, has been invited back to perform at Bluesfest in London in October and will be performing at Kew Gardens with Jools Holland in July. Her October tour will be her most extensive UK tour to date, with more than 20 venues.

Nell is also getting recognition for her talents as a songwriter, with her song “Sirens” being picked up by Cher for her latest album, “Closer to the Truth”, with Cher stating on many occasions that it was her favourite song on the album and one of her best ever vocal performances.

And if all that wasn’t enough, in January Nell announced her marriage to her British boyfriend. Expect Downton Abbey inspired wedding photos in the summer!

The Urban Voodoo Machine: Live & On Tour

The Urban Voodoo Machine: Live & On Tour

Glasswerk is proud to present the strange and wonderful world of The Urban Voodoo Machine. In 2003 the band revealed the dark chaotic world of the bourbon soaked Voodoo Machine, to catch a glimpse of the madness see them live on the following dates

15 May – Leaf Cafe, Liverpool
21 May – FAC251, Manchester – CANCELLED

Manchester show has unfortunately been cancelled. Tickets can be refunded or used at Liverpool date. Please contact your ticket provider for details

The Urban Voodoo Machine is a collective of shadowy, London based, ne’er do wells, led by Norwegian born songwriter/frontman Paul-Ronney Angel. Featuring up to twelve musicians at any given time, The ‘Machine mash-up guitars, twin drumers, fiddle, trumpet, tuba, banjo, washboard, upright bass, gong, mandolin, accordion, harmonicas, saxophone, sousaphone and even empty bottles and tie racks to create their unique brand of Bourbon Soaked Gypsy Blues Bop’n’Stroll.

“With their lurching sea shanties, debauched murder ballads, messed-up tangos and whiskey-soaked gypsy stomps, some reckon they’re from the same stable of stallions as Tom Waits and Nick Cave; others point out the last gang in town swagger of The Clash and the hellbound blues that John Lee Hooker first dragged out of the swamp”
The stars were very much aligned the night Paul-Ronney Angel was begged by a promoter to be the filling in a triple-bill band sandwich. Never one to turn down a knees-up, P-R realised he had 48 hours to put a band together. No problem! Trawling the dives and doss houses of London, he called in some favours, cracked some whips and so it was that The Urban Voodoo Machine lurched into life.

That was April 2003 and since then, this shadowy, rambunctious troupe of rabblerousing troubadours has been bringing the spirit of the carnie and their now legendary ‘Gypsy Hotel’ nights (famous for the attendance of strippers, fire-eaters , jugglers and sundry degenerates,) to the stages of clubs, festivals and theatres across London, the UK and Europe at large.

In 2008 the Urban Voodoo Machine opened for The Pogues on their American tour after a personal invitation from Spider Stacy, which in turn led to them being offered The Pogues full UK & Ireland X-Mas tour later the same year. The following year saw the release of their debut album ‘Bourbon Soaked Gypsy Blues Bop’N’Stroll’, on Gypsy Hotel Records. The album scored top reviews in all the major music magazines and made ‘Albums of the Year’ lists in Classic Rock and Big Cheese magazines. This was backed with lots of live shows and touring including headlining East London’s prestigious and beautiful Hackney Empire and joining the legendary New York Dolls on their UK tour.

Notable live events since then have included prestige shows in Norway, Hungary, Spain, Finland, Holland, Belgium, Portugal, Switzerland, Germany and France.
Major festival appearances include Glastonbury, Download, Latitude, Edinburgh, Sziget, Hard Rock Calling alongside Paul McCartney, Bestival, Bulldog Bash and Ukraine Stadium alongside Goran Bregovic and they have performed everywhere from prisons, schools and churches!

Second album ‘In Black’N’Red’, was released to more positive acclaim and hullaballo from the media in 2011. A collection of rare tracks and early EP sides called ‘Rare Gumbo’ was released to coincide with the bands sell-out 10th anniversary show at London’s historic Leicester Square theatre in June 2013. This was followed late the same year by a double A-sided single ‘Help Me Jesus / Heroin (Has Put My Brothers In The Ground) which featured legendary British guitarist Wilko Johnson. At the time of writing the bands third studio recording ‘Love, Drink & Death’ is in the proverbial bag and scheduled for release late summer / early autumn 2014.

Anneke Van Giersbergen: Live In Manchester

Anneke Van Giersbergen: Live In Manchester

Glasswerk is proud to present award winning dutch solo artist Anneke Van Giersbergen. Anneke will be touring the UK in April, come and catch her Manchester on:

23 April – FAC 251, Manchester

On September 23 2013 Dutch singer-songwriter Anneke van Giersbergen released her fifth studio album, Drive via PIAS Recordings Holland and InsideOut Music.

On this follow-up to 2012’s Everything is Changing, Anneke collaborated with Dutch songwriter and producer Arno Krabman, enlisting the help of her live band to lay down the new tracks. In a time when bands are creating entire albums by transferring files online, Anneke explains that she was keen to do things the old-fashioned way: “I really wanted to record an album together with a group of musicians in a studio.” Having toured extensively with the same tight-knit group of musicians, the result is an organic sound that perfectly captures our chemistry as a band.

Having proven her credentials and immense vocal talent for 13 years as front woman of The Gathering, in 2007 Anneke felt it was time to begin her own solo career. Along with her new band Agua de Annique the charismatic singer quickly established herself as a solo artist, releasing several albums to critical and popular acclaim.

Anneke also found time to collaborate with some of her long-time friends and musical peers, lending her honey-sweet, yet powerful voice to the likes of Anathema (Falling Deeper), the eccentric Devin Townsend (Addicted!, Epicloud) and fellow Dutchmen Within Temptation (Black Symphony).

2012’s Everything is Changing was something of a milestone in Anneke’s solo career. The album, which was the first to be released under her own name without the Agua de Annique moniker, got her nominated for two Edison awards – Holland’s most prestigious music prize – in the categories ‘Best Female Artist’ and ‘Best Album’. Not only was it a success in her home country, Everything is Changing took Anneke all over the world as she toured over 25 different countries including the UK, Germany, France and throughout Latin America.

The new album shows Anneke to be on top form and more multifaceted than ever, with songs ranging from her signature intimate ballads to euphoric stadium rock anthems – and as always, her ethereally beautiful voice is the jewel in the centre.

Amy Speace: Live In London

Amy Speace: Live In London

Glasswerk presents politically driven folk songstress Amy Speace. Amy hailing from Nashville has received massive critical acclaim through her career through a spectrum of journalists and fans, praised for her political almost poetic writing. You can catch Amy live in London on the 7th April at Surya, with support Ethan Ash, for more information and tickets click here

“Amy Speace’s songs hang together like a short story collection, united by a common vantage point and common predicaments…it’s a gift to hear a heart so modest even when it’s wide open,” says legendary rock critic Dave Marsh in his liner notes to Amy Speace’s newest collection “How To Sleep In A Stormy Boat” (WindBone/Tone Tree).

Marsh continues, “It is the most daring, confident, ambitious and beautiful album Amy Speace has made since she began recording.” Speace, once an actress with The National Shakespeare Company, has crafted a document to living gracefully with grief that weaves a most unlikely yet beautifully poetic narrative between her very modern lamentings and the characters in Shakespeare’s plays. The New York Times wrote “For those who argue that poetry is a dying genre, I suggest listening to Amy Speace.” The Tennessean writes, “What Speace says – what she sings — she says with a confluence of poetry and honesty, of emotional specificity.” And she was recently featured in NPR’s “All Things Considered.”

Although Amy began her creative career in the theatre, acting with The National Shakespeare Company and various other classical repertory theatres, she long ago left behind the stage to pursue music full time. She was discovered by Judy Collins and signed to Collins’ imprint, Wildflower Records, releasing two critically-acclaimed albums. Judy Collins herself recorded Amy’s song, “The Weight of the World,” calling it “one of the best political folk songs I’ve ever heard.” Along the way, she gained support and praise from such legends as Guy Clark and Nanci Griffith, Ian Hunter and Alejandro Escovedo, an unlikely combination until you hear Amy’s songs. The Houston Press called her “The unconscious cool of Americana,” nodding to the lean poetry of her rootsy folk, an edge possibly learned busking in the subways of NYC, or playing Juliet in parking lot productions of “Romeo & Juliet”. But it’s her voice that catches the audience off guard. A crystal clear voice with an emotional catch and a fluttering vibrato that seems grounded in another era yet somehow speaks to this one. Mary Gauthier says, “There are voices that serve as a bridge from the past to the future and act as soul connectors, and as a people we need them to keep singing. These voices open hearts with this rare, one in a million quality. Amy Speace has such a voice. Just ask the legendarily discerning Judy Collins; she’ll tell you. Amy’s got it, and then some. She is a timeless artist, a time traveller. Part past, part future. And that’s a good thing, a really good thing.

For those who argue that poetry is a dying genre, I suggest listening to Amy Speace.” New York Times

There’s turmoil in the songs on this album – and then there’s a calmness to offset that, to cope with that – that’s the big clue behind the album’s title I guess; that Amy Speace has learned/is learning to cope, and that she has a way forward, a way through. Earnest songwriting and honest songwriting aren’t often actually the same thing. But here I believe her. I believe in her. I believe the songs – and I’m swept up in the performance. Her best album. Until the next album…” Off The Tracks

An NPR critic commented, “Her velvety achey voice recalls an early Lucinda Williams.”

Judy Collins describes the song “Weight of the World” as “one of the best political folk songs I’ve ever heard.

And in The Tennessean, Peter Cooper writes, “What Speace says — what she sings — she tries to say with a confluence of poetry and honesty, of emotional specificity.” He goes on to say that her ballad from the new album, “The Sea & the Shore” written with Robbie Hecht and performed with Grammy-nominated John Fullbright, is “a song about attraction, about patience and timing, about want and need and consequence. And it ends in a breakup.

Ethan Ash

Ash is one of music’s most impressive songwriters and talents: having garnered critical praise and support; he is still ‘under the radar’- deserving of more respect and acclaim.

Sam Liddicott, musicmusingsandsuch (2015)

Great artist, great EP, great track… just great” “…song writing supremo

Tom Simkins, BBC Introducing (2014)

“Ethan, with just his guitar for company, grabbed the attention …and bewitched them with his stunning, mesmeric voice, his instantly likable stage mannerisms and those all- important hook-laden songs… he proceeded to deliver what has to go down in history as one of the most impressive debuts (if not gigs) at the venue since the grand opening.

Will Munn, Rhythm & Booze (2015)

The musician played but a handful of songs, as he was billed along other fellow artists that night. Only six tracks which however were enough to prove that Ash really is talented and that he sounds even better live than on record.

Arthur Lee's Love Revisited: Live And On Tour

Arthur Lee’s Love Revisited: Live And On Tour

Glasswerk is proud to present Arthur Lee’s Love. Marking the ten years of Arthur Lee’s passing the band will be reuniting for one more tour performing only the classics from the first three albums, can catch this tribute to Arthur Lee on the following dates:

23 June – The Ruby Lounge, Manchester
25 June – Leaf Cafe, Liverpool

To mark the 10th anniversary of Arthur Lee’s passing, LOVE revisited sees his longest serving band perform classic songs from LOVE’s first three albums LOVE, DE CAPO and FOREVER CHANGES.

From 1993 until Arthur’s death in 2006, the band Baby Lemonade performed with him, being an essential part of the renaissance of LOVE’s music. This iteration of LOVE saw many sold out tours, as well as back to back Glastonbury performances and an appearance on Later with Jools Holland.

Joining Baby Lemonade is LOVE’s original lead guitar player and founding member Johnny Echols, who was part of the classic line up that recorded the seminal FOREVER CHANGES.
Johnny Echols and Arthur Lee were childhood friends whose families both moved from Memphis to Los Angeles. Teenage Johnny & Arthur teamed up to form the groups Arthur Lee & The LAG’s and the American Four before they formed LOVE in 1965. The classic LOVE line up featuring Johnny disbanded in 1968. Johnny reunited with Arthur Lee in 2005 to perform with LOVE once more.

Baby Lemonade formed in 1992 by Rusty Squeezebox, Mike Randle, David “Daddy-O” Green, later adding Dave Chapple to the mix. In 1993 the band landed the gig of a lifetime opening up for LOVE. That show was the last for that incarnation of LOVE as Arthur replaced them with the 4 Baby Lemonade members. Baby Lemonade released records on Sympathy for the Record Industry, Munster and Big Deal between 1993 and 2001.
Upon their return from a LOVE tour of Europe, in 1996, Baby Lemonade was shocked to find that Arthur had been sentenced to 12 years in prison on a weapons charge.
After nearly 6 years in prison, Arthur’s case was overturned and shortly after, at his request, Baby Lemonade began rehearsing for what would be non-stop LOVE touring throughout North America, UK, Europe and Australia between 2002 and 2005 where they enjoyed unprecedented success with sold out tours, back to back Glastonbury performances, Roskilde, Royal Festival Hall and an appearance on the Later with Jools Holland TV Show.

In 2005 the LOVE line up once again featured Arthur’s childhood friend and founding member Johnny Echols on lead guitar who returned after a 37 year absence.
In July of 2005, Arthur was diagnosed with Leukaemia and after a brave battle he passed away one year later. Arthur’s last show was with Baby Lemonade and Johnny Echols on June 23rd at San Francisco’s Cafe Du Nord. The world had lost a true music legend.
In 2016 LOVE revisited will celebrate the music of LOVE and mark Arthur Lee’s passing by reuniting for a 10 year anniversary UK tour.

An Evening With Arthur Brown

An Evening With Arthur Brown

Glasswerk presents An evening through the life of Arthur Brown, presented in a theatrical format, Arthur Brown will retell the stories of his life, touring and off stage, catch Arthur Brown at the following dates:

04 March – Cecil Sharp House, London
11 March – Ruby Lounge, Manchester

The Crazy World of Arthur Brown celebrated 45 years of the massive worldwide hit FIRE in 2013, with a brand new live show including the legendary fire helmet and rock n roll theatricals.

Arthur Brown first came to prominence in swinging London in 1967, after spending some time on the Paris underground scene Arthur was quickly signed to Track Records at the instruction of The Who’s Pete Townshend and released the single Devils Grip, regarded by some as the record that gave the birth of Heavy Metal.

Arthur is best thought of for his 1968 Number one single Fire that still gets regular airplay all over the world and has been covered by the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, Die Krupps, The Prodigy and The Who.

Arthur’s next band Kingdom Come performed as the main act at the first filmed Glastonbury Festival in 1971 and in 1973 Kingdome Come was the first band to release an album using a Drum Machine.

Artists such as Peter Gabriel, Alice Cooper and Bruce Dickenson site Arthur Brown as a major influence on them and in this Arthur’s fifth decade in music the fire is far from out.

Arthur’s most recent album Voices Of Love had major critical acclaim and Arthur received the Classic Rock magazine showman of the year award.

New Album ‘Zim Zam Zim’ is out now following a successful pledge campaign that has shown incredible support for The God Of Hellfire 45 years after the release of his first hit single. Tracks from the album were toured in 2014 across the UK and Europe, alongside demonstrations of a new pioneering technology – a thought control helmet that enable Arthur to create music with the power of his mind!

2015 sees Arthur embark on a unique life story tour ‘An Evening with Arthur Brown’ around the UK, telling tales from his amazing career spanning almost 50 years, as well as European shows and a huge amount of festivals.

Teen Daze: Live In London

Teen Daze: Live In London

Glasswerk is proud to present the sounds of the ambient-electro Teen Daze live in Surya, London on the 29 January

In 2010, Jamison, the person behind Teen Daze, had no idea what Four More Years bring. That debut EP, a collection of blissful home recordings, was the work of a carefree 24 year-old. By 2012, things had changed, as they tend to do: relationships dissolved, illness affected his family, windows for outward communication were closing. The gravity of it all made for constant output; he reached for futuristic utopia with All Of Us, Together, found a devotional sanctuary inside The Inner Mansions, and embraced hibernation on Glacier. In hindsight, this was an artist coping through various forms of introverted escapism.

While proud of the material, Jamison sought to break this cycle when approaching the next record. He knew it would take a few leaps of faith, most directly: out of his bedroom… out of his comfort zone. For the first time, he gave up some control, inviting the input of others. Bearing over 30 demos, Jamison joined one of his musical heroes John Vanderslice at Tiny Telephone, his all-analog studio in San Francisco. Beyond the immediate sonic advantages of recording to tape, the sessions with Vanderslice and co-producer Simon Bridgefoot encouraged a new positivity and confidence to his craft.

The result is Morning World, eleven fully built, balanced, and expressed songs, the most vulnerable and honest Teen Daze LP to date. Thematically, Jamison paints a familiar picture: a Garden of Eden, a place of transcendent, painfree beauty, but with one key distinction… it’s not real and time there is finite. With vocals boldly up front—surrounded by strings, piano, guitar, and live percussion—he details a realm that, for the first time, has room for more than one. “Where does life go when it’s done,” he poses in the closing moments of “Post Storm”, before lending an answer that evokes the omnipresent wisdom of All Things Must Pass: “a moon replaces morning sun.

Mishka Shubaly: Live And On Tour

Mishka Shubaly: Live And On Tour

Glasswerk is proud to present American born singer-songwriter Mishka Shubaly, spliced with folk and rough southern edge, Mishka has developed a unique sound, to which the thirty seven states and seven countries he has toured would agree! You can catch Mishka on tour in the UK on the following dates:

[Click on dates for tickets]

21st May – The Ruby Lounge, Manchester
22nd May – 100 Club, London

There is a town in north Ontario… Mishka Shubaly was born there in the year Vladimir Nabokov and Elvis Presley died. He was a bright kid, if a little soft. When he was eight, he moved with his family to Los Alamos, New Mexico where his rocket scientist father had landed a job working on Ronald Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative. When Shubaly was 13, his family moved again, to New Hampshire. There, he excelled at both academics and fighting, landing High Honors while only one further dust-up away from expulsion.

Mishka Shubaly started university at Simon’s Rock College of Bard at age fifteen and graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Colorado at 20. At 22, he was awarded the Dean’s Fellowship, the largest merit-based scholarship offered by Columbia University’s School of the Arts. Over one winter break, he recorded “Thanks For Letting Me Crash,” an EP of hungover bedroom 4-tracks, which he quietly self-released in 2001. That EP slowly gathered praise from bands like Dead Meadow and several record labels. Shubaly interned at The New Yorker reading fiction and was offered an internship at Harper’s Magazine, which he declined in order to crew on a sailboat in the Caribbean, which promptly sank. Mishka Shubaly received a note of commendation from the Dean of the University for completing a deceased classmate’s thesis so he could graduate posthumously. He graduated with an MFA in Fiction in 2003. Upon receiving his expensive degree, he promptly quit writing in order to play music and ruin his life.

Mishka lived out of a Toyota minivan for a year, touring nonstop as a singer songwriter, and shared the stage with artists like The Strokes, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Decemberists among many others. In 2007, Stumptown Records released “How To Make A Bad Situation Worse,” a sprawling record reveling in drunken chaos Shubaly had written and recorded as his life was unraveling. That record found firebrand comedian Doug Stanhope, who declared Shubaly his favorite musician, and dragged him out on tour around the country. The shows were so successful that Shubaly had to get sober in 2009.

Shubaly’s writing has appeared in publications such as The Denver Post, NYMag.com, and New York Press. “Shipwrecked,” his firsthand account of a disaster at sea was named one of the “Best E-books of April” by Amazon.com, where it has sold more than 30,000 copies.

His second Kindle Single, “The Long Run”, about his journey from addict to long distance runner, has sold more than 80,000 copies to date and was cited as one of Amazon’s Bestselling Kindle Singles to date. Mishka’s four subsequent Kindle Singles, “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” “Bachelor Number One,” “Beat The Devil,” and “Of Mice and Me” have all been bestsellers. He is rapidly approaching 200,000 total sales. His Singles have been translated into Spanish, German and Polish. In November, 2014, Shubaly published a collection of his Kindle Singles with a foreword by Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos.

In the spring of 2011, Mishka was invited by the Peabody-winning Moth Radio Hour to tell an oral version of “Shipwrecked” at The Great Hall at Cooper Union alongside Richard Price and other storytellers. “Shipwrecked” is often broadcast on NPR for the Moth Radio Hour.

In 2014, Mishka Shubaly signed a book deal with Public Affairs Books for a full-length memoir about his transition from drunk, drugged gutter-dweller to sober ultra-runner. He was a featured speaker at the vaunted National Arts Club in Manhattan in June and has been touring nationally opening for Doug Stanhope. His songs “Don’t Cut Your Hair” and “The Only One Drinking Tonight” are featured on Doug Stanhope’s podcast. He is a regular guest on the wildly popular podcast of vegan Ironman legend Rich Roll.

Having played gigs in US thirty-seven states and several countries, in 2015 his album “Coward’s Path” is being released by Invisible Hands Music. It is a tragic, funny and always honest account of his former life dealing with addiction and what happened along the path to sobriety. Johnny Depp calls it, “Always a favourite – sublime!” and comedian Doug Stanhope says, “If you have ever considered committing suicide at happy hour, Mishka Shubaly is the singer-songwriter for you.”

Black Peaks: Live In Liverpool

Black Peaks: Live In Liverpool

Glasswerk is proud to present Brighton’s very own: Black Peaks has received numerous positive reviews from all over the board for their grimy psychedelic sound, even racking up over a hundred thousand views on their video ‘Savior‘. The band are on tour and will be hitting Liverpool on the 19 February 2016 at Arts Club, tickets are available now!

Upon his return from traversing the globe, guitarist, Joe Gosney formed the nucleus of the band with drummer, Liam Kearley and bassist, Andrew Gosden. They set about writing music, instrumentally at first, with influences ranging from Mastodon to Oceansize. When they heard that vocalist, Will Gardner, had left his previous band they suggested they jam. The rest has been recorded into history. There’s more to come.

Having released a handful of songs since their inception in October 2012, it was the Closer To The Sun EP released under the band’s original name of Shrine in mid-2014 that caught the attention of those with their ears to the ground as a few blogs picked up on their excellence.

Say You Will’, taken from the Closer To The Sun EP, received its first spin on BBC Radio 1 on Edith Bowman’s Review Show to an overwhelmingly positive public response. This led to several more plays by Zane Lowe in the prime evening slot and also on Daniel P. Carter’s influential Rock Show.

The video gained over 20,000 views in its first month – and climbing fast. More and more tongues started wagging about this young quartet’s sounds. Watch them grow.

Exceptional. Just exceptional. Zane LoweSoooo good.Daniel P. Carter

The band have already supported the likes of Pelican, Deafheaven and Arcane Roots and made their debut festival appearance at 2014’s Sonisphere Festival.

Music courses through everything they do. Their plan is to tour the world, see the world and play music to the world. Ambitious? Perhaps, but you’d be ill-advised to bet against them.

Bluetones Frontman Mark Morriss On Tour

Bluetones Frontman Mark Morriss On Tour

Glasswerk is proud to present the legendary Bluetones frontman Mark Morriss. You catch him specifically on these two dates in December: Click on them for tickets.

12 December – Surya – London
18 December – Southport Pier

“You are the scream of a jet/ You are a whispered amen/It’s not a question of if anymore/It’s a question of when…
‘It’s Hard To Be Good All the Time”

Can it really be twenty years since Mark Morriss first shimmied into our lives as singer with The Bluetones?

Apparently so. But thirteen hit singles, three Top Ten albums and a collaboration with a national treasure later -more of which shortly- – his ability to sieve poetry from the colander of every day life remains unique. “I always try to add little things that most songs wouldn’t use,” he says of the lyrics on his remarkable first solo album ‘proper’, A Flash Of Darkness. “If I can squeeze a mention of Bergerac into a song (as he does in surefire smash ‘Consuela’) then I’m happy.

While it might not take Jersey’s finest to track down a copy, it’s fair to say that the release of Mark’s folk-infused solo debut, Memory Muscle, in 2008 was low key, despite string arrangements from the legendary composer David Arnold. However, it wasn’t until The Bluetones split up in October 2011 that he thought seriously about his next move. “To be honest I didn’t know what I was going to do,” he says with typical candour. “So I threw a lot of irons into the fire.

While one of these resulted in him writing the music for David Walliams’ audio books (“great fun”), he was still writing songs. Only this time, with a view to other people singing them. “It really freed me up. But the songs I came up with were so personal I realized they might be difficult for anyone else to sing them.”

Dave McPherson: Frontman of INME

Dave McPherson: Frontman of INME

Glasswerk is proud to present INME’s frontman Dave McPherson. Dave will be playing across three dates, to find tickets click on the links below:

15 December – The Sunflower Birmingham
16 December – Surya London
17 December – Castle Hotel Manchester
18 December – Arts Club Liverpool

It’s curious that the mainstream pop industry should feel the need to dish out accolades like ‘Hardest Working Band of the Year’; the likes of JLS seem to roll forward on the adoration of their teen fanbase and steady flow of hard cash into their bank accounts, and you’d hope that even they would be a little embarrassed by such a title. Stranger still that PRS for Music, an invaluable and respected aid to every hardworking musician out there, should be the ones who bestow this title. The 34 shows were qualified as being at major concert venues, but many musicians will tell you that such a factor is unlikely make it any more hard work. You might ask Dave McPherson, who in 2012 managed to clock up 200+ shows, ranging from London’s Islington Academy to small rooms above pubs in the likes of Devizes, Burnley and Ipswich…

If any of the above sounds like bitterness, it’s quite simply not – light amusement perhaps, as any award that can have Steps cruise in at third place should be taken with a pinch of salt. Dave himself has tasted the mainstream with his alternative rock band InMe a decade ago, playing major festival main stages and touring the world when he was just 19. It’s a completely different world to the one that he currently – and happily it should be added – exists in. This self-confessed Star Trek obsessive is more than happy to embrace his inner geek and in truly modern style spends hours a day noting lyrical ideas in his iPhone, researching ideas and singing newly formed melodies to himself in the street. Dave is comfortable in his own skin; whether that is touring pubs, large venues with the likes of Charlie Simpson and Devin Townsend or festivals like Download and Beautiful Days in search of new listeners, fine ale and old friends on the road. Dave has been consistently touring, creating music, and putting smiles on the faces of his audience throughout the past decade, but only fairly recently has this been as a fully formed solo artist.

It was in 2007 that Dave first started strapping on his acoustic guitar, hopping on trains around the country and couch surfing his way into the ears of listeners who were eager to see a true live artist do his thing. The use of the term “true” shouldn’t be ambiguous, but for qualification in this instance it is used to describe a performer with a soulful and technically gifted voice, an intricate and passionate style of guitar playing, and one who uses these skills to great effect on an abundance of self penned material. Dave isn’t the first person to do this, but the singer-songwriter world is perhaps more weighed down by mediocrity than most in the music sphere; anyone can play guitar, anyone can stand up and sing their heart out, but not many people stand out and engross their audience in the way that Dave McPherson undoubtedly does.

After a number of DIY EP’s taken out on tour at a point when Dave was fast approaching 700 solo shows, 2011 saw him truly enter the realm of the solo artist and release ‘The Hardship Diaries’ in via Pledge Music. The fan-fuelled label provided the perfect platform for Dave to engage with his supporters and they responded by pushing him through the 100% target of sales and smash well and truly through 200% in a matter of weeks. The album was a very personal collection of songs, exemplifying Dave’s song-writing ability in a way that his previous work never really could. In a music industry that many say is beginning to disregard the album format, Dave showed that this medium is still the most accessible and important way to gather together a true representation of what an artist is all about.

None of this is to say that Dave is not open to creative ideas and challenges in a bid to get his music heard, and it is here that we can unequivocally return to the notion of “hard work”. 2013 is to be the busiest year of Dave McPherson’s career as he embarks first on the ‘The Good People Movement: 365’ – the mammoth task of writing and recording a song every day of the year. This in itself is quite a challenge, but when you consider that he will do this during the year when his second solo album is released and toured, you can really comprehend that “hard work” is certainly a relative term. What is apparent with Dave McPherson, however, is that he sees this as his passion – music has long since absorbed and consumed him to the point of it feeling like a way of life, not hard work.

‘Dreamoirs’ will be released in May 2013, preceded by a Pledge Music campaign beginning on February 1st. It is Dave’s most involving musical project to date, allowing fans to obtain an abundance of exclusive music, multi-media, unique updates and mountains more. Dave sees it as a way of keeping music personal in a manner that massively benefits listeners, artists, charity and creativity. The concept of the album is, as the title suggests, based around dreams, and this will be reflected in the music and the various elements that fans will be able to get involved in. It is also an album that sees full band instrumentation (performed on the record by Dave himself, no less) and his supporters will be given the opportunity to hear these songs live in some rare full band Dave McPherson performances this summer. Whereas ‘The Hardship Diaries’ was essentially a “break-up” record, at times rushed and spontaneous, ‘Dreamoirs’ is reflective and explores more subject matter: it’s a focused record that Dave has put a considerable amount of work, thought and passion into.

For a taste of what is set to come, ‘Lady Luck’ is available for streaming now.

Dodgy: Live And On Tour

Dodgy: Live And On Tour

Glasswerk are proud to present Dodgy.Dodgy’s triumphant return from the nineteens has been met with incredible reception, The double platinum selling artists are back on tour and you can catch them live at FAC 251, Manchester on the 14th November

Dodgy’s comeback album from 3 years ago, STAND UPRIGHT IN A COOL PLACE, was a long time coming, 15 years to be precise since the double platinum selling ‘Free Peace Sweet’, and from the four and five star reviews and many media plaudits that were heaped upon Stand Upright…. it seems that the original line up of the band had done the impossible – to reform the band and make a contemporary and relevant album, surpassing their previous work, testament indeed to the unique chemistry and overflowing creativity of Nigel Clark, Andy Miller and Mathew Priest. Creating a sound with “golden harmonies and echoes of CSN&Y and Fleet Foxes”, and prompting The Word magazine to say

They’ve just made the record of their career by a country mile

A result for which the contribution by mixer Matt Pence, known for his work with the likes of Midlake and John Grant, should not be underestimated.

The first time round, Dodgy were only together for seven years but in that time they sold over a million records worldwide, released three albums and 12 Top 40 singles, including Staying Out For The Summer, In A Room, If You’re Thinking Of Me and the Top 5 hit Good Enough, still a staple of the radio playlists. They sold out the Brixton Academy for three nights in a row and were awarded an unprecedented 90-minute Saturday evening slot on the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury Festival in 1997 just before Radiohead. Not bad, considering that they also partied harder than an Ewok.

Since the release of Stand Upright In A Cool Place in 2012, Dodgy haven’t really stopped as live gigs and festival appearances have always been an important part of the Dodgy experience, for many they are the perfect festival band. The band have been ripping it up at most of the festivals worth their salt, such as Feastival, BT LONDON LIVE, Camp Bestival, V Festival, Glastonbury, Wychwood, Strawberry Fields, Hardwick Live, Kendal Calling and many many more in the UK and Europe.

Now, three years on from the phenomenal reunion album, the band are finally ready to release their new album in Autumn 2015. The boys believe it is their best ever record, but they’re not the only ones – Cenzo Townshend who has worked with anyone who is anyone nowadays (Florence, U2, Primal Scream etc) heard the demos and demanded to mix some tracks. Similarly, Rob Da Bank heard two tracks and offered Dodgy a slot on the Mainstage at Bestival in September 2015.

Dodgy’s new album is a revelation” – Guardian ****

Space: Skank it up In Manchester

Glasswerk are proud to present the weird and wonderful Space. Space will be touring to promote their first box set of albums ever released due for release in late December, you can catch Space live on the 22 November at FAC 251, Manchester

And so to 2015 and after the release of their latest album ‘Attack Of The Mutant 50ft Kebab’- their first new album for nine years. Tommy’s influence for the new songs stemmed from his infamous fascination with science and horror films, and he likens the album to a ‘Fifties B-Movie’ for the ears. The band continue to tour the UK through 2015 performing at Festivals through the summer before embarking on the full uk tour October, November and December to promote the first ever Boxset of Albums. due for release Xmas 2015.

Proud to note how Space have always stood out from the ‘normal,’ Tommy concedes that their latest album has the usual signature Space quirkiness, with some extra ingredients added to the mix – he describes the songs as a mish-mash of SKA, Punk and the classic Space sound. “When we tour, we love playing the old stuff, but I always knew I wanted to record some new material. We know the fans like to hear the old classics from our multi-million selling albums ‘Spiders’ and ‘Tin Planet’, but we wanted to give them something extra.

The title track on the album is my favourite song, and is the story of how a fifty foot kebab from a side street takeaway shop wreaks its revenge on the ailing high street. It’s a message about survival in a tongue-in-cheek way. We’ll be releasing our first single from this album in January 2014, a track called ‘Fortune Teller’ – keeping up with the mystic vibe!

The band have already previewed some of the new songs on their last tour, and although they went down a storm with fans, Tommy admits the recording of the album took longer than expected “because I’m such a perfectionist.

Space have sold over 2 million albums world wide with titles including “Spiders, “Tin Planet” “Suburban Rock and Roll” and “Attack of the Mutant 50ft Kebab” and also released 10 top 40 singles and host of other single releases to-date with titles including “Neighbourhood” “Female of the Species”, “Me and You Vs The World” “Avenging Angels” “Dark Clouds”,and “Begin Again” The band continue to write gritty edgy pop songs that captive the imagination of the listener, The band release the Album Box Set in October 2015 to include the 4 albums released todate plus the un-released Album “Love you More Than Football” along with a new studio album to be written and recorded in September….

D At Sea: Youtube star on tour

D At Sea: Youtube star on tour

Glasswerk is proud to present D At Sea, an acoustic artists hailing from Brisbane, Australia. D At Sea takes an incredible folk spin on a lot of modern Metal and Pop Punk anthems.

You can catch D At Sea on the following dates:

[Click on dates for tickets]

28th October – Alfie Birds, Birmingham
29th October – FAC 251, Manchester
01 November – Surya, London

Better known by his moniker D at Sea, Doyle Perez became a YouTube sensation after his acoustic cover of Parkway Drive’s “Carrion” went viral in late 2011. Since the Parkway Drive video D at Sea has released a host of other reworked renditions of songs from the hardcore genre including tracks by The Amity Affliction, Bring Me the Horizon and Of Mice and Men among others, garnishing more than 3.5million views on his YouTube channel and attracting almost 28,000 facebook likes.

Despite his growing fan base and notoriety, music wasn’t always front and center for Doyle, who had not initially considered it a career option. Before an injury at the age of 19 his relationship with music was that of a fan, simply enjoying listening to other bands and, like most kids of the 90s, taping his favorite songs from the radio onto cassette tapes that would be played back later and copied onto mixed tapes to share with friends.
However injury forced him to reassess his priorities. Playing and writing music became a way to cope with rehab and changes to his everyday activity, as well as providing an outlet for his creativity.

For someone who took to music much later than most his acoustic renditions of songs from the hardcore illustrate his natural ability and keen ear for music. The self taught musician only discovered he was able to sing acoustically after meeting his girlfriend and fellow musician Millie Tizzard, who encouraged him to branch out from the more metal-focused music he was playing in bands Confession, Lemon Smashle and All My Friends at Sea.

700,000 + plays later “Carrion” is still getting attention on D at Sea’s YouTube channel among his more recent uploads. When asked why he chose that particular song Doyle says “Carrion chords were the first to spark the idea for me. I can’t scream so I’d just sing along instead. I wanted to portray the songs in a different light. Just because it’s heavy music, doesn’t mean it’s angry music… I love Parkway. I needed to find the down-time equivalent to heavy music. Acoustic Hardcore! Perfect. I was very surprised by how accepting people were of the idea”.

Beyond the covers, Perez has managed to tour consistently around Australia, selling out shows in Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne, all the while continuing in his spare time to play in parks to hundreds of all ages fans.

Live performances have given Perez the chance to preview his original material to an ever-growing fan base. The songs tell tales of time, life, friends, family, injury and catharsis – all penned with same the honesty and sincerity that the artists he’s covered have become famous for.

D at Sea’s first original single “December” was released late January for free download and stream, and once again thousands of fans took to the track. Only this time it was his own song, and more importantly, his own words. “December” was written as a coping mechanism for Perez, serving as a meditative process during a particularly challenging time, something he hopes will resonate with fans.

Whatever the challenges before, D at Sea is the silver lining that has allowed Perez to channel his creativity and create heart-felt songs that appear on his debut EP “Unconscious”, available worldwide now via UNFD.

[Click on dates for tickets]

21st November – Leaf Cafe, Liverpool
27th November – Glee Club, Birmingham
28th November – FAC251, Manchester
6th December – The Maze – Nottingham

Guitarist and songwriter Nick Harper is pleased to announce details of a special 12” vinyl record titled The Wilderness Years Vol. 2 featuring tracks taken from his acclaimed studio albums ‘Blood Songs’ (2003), ‘Treasure Island’ (2005) and ‘Miracles for Beginners’ (2007) to be released in October 2015 on Vinyl 180 Records.

He will also be returning to the live circuit this August as part of a special residency at the Edinburgh Festival 2015 at The Jazz Bar, before a run of October/November UK headline dates to promote the new record.

The latest record is the second in a three part series that marks the first time Nick’s extensive back catalogue has ever been released on vinyl and will culminate in a very special limited edition box set of all three compilation vinyls set for release on Record Store Day 2016 with a special companion book. More details of the boxed set will be released over the coming months.

From personal introspection to biting political satire via a charmingly caustic wit that would make Groucho Marx proud, for over a decade he has been dazzling audiences and reviewers alike with this heady mix of virtuosity, boyish charm, showmanship and sheer bravado. His talent and showmanship were recognised in 2003 with a (Glasgow) Herald Fringe Angel award for excellence in live music during his Edinburgh Festival run.

Nick’s most recent work has seen him appear in the studio alongside Lana Del Ray playing guitar on her cover of Leonard Cohen’s hit “Chelsea Hotel No 2” from her acclaimed 2014 album ‘Ultraviolence’ as well as appearing on recordings from Newton Faulkner, Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) and The Levellers.

Son of the legendary UK singer-songwriter Roy Harper, Nick was born in London and raised in Wiltshire. Having played the guitar from the age of 10 and surrounded by the likes of Keith Moon, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and Dave Gilmour as he grew up, his rock and roll credentials were already well-assured before a chance meeting with Squeeze frontman and songwriter Glenn Tilbrook in 1996. Tilbrook was so impressed that he offered Nick a job playing with and supporting Squeeze and promptly signed Nick to his own label, Quixotic Records. Following tours in the UK, USA and Japan, Nick recorded the 1998 album Smithereens with Tilbrook as producer. This album and subsequent 40 date solo tour, including dates in New York and Glastonbury, confirmed Nick as a formidable talent in his own right.

Between albums, Nick is known for touring with a vengeance – he’s now appeared at Glastonbury Festival six times – but also for his charity work, since devoting more energy to fundraising projects as one of the organisers of ‘Avebury Rocks’, a charity walk and rock concert held near Nick’s home in Wiltshire, raising substantial funds for The Prospect Hospice. In 2007 Harper’s charity single ‘Blue Sky Thinking’ went to No.1 in the iTunes charts with all proceeds from the single donated to the Love Hope Strength Foundation. Nick had just returned from Nepal after setting a new world record for the highest gig on earth at Kala Pattar above Mt. Everest Base Camp on October 21st 2007, whilst helping raise over £200,000 for the fight against cancer, before going on to play as part of the Love Hope Strength all-star band to approximately 20,000 people in Kathmandu. Nick has been on two further treks with the foundation to Macchu Picchu in Peru and Kilimanjaro in Tanzania helping to raise substantial funds for local cancer centres and hospitals.
After a myriad of studio albums, Nick’s work is thankfully still as fresh and vital today as it was on his first solo release in 1994, but, as evidenced with his highly personal 2004 “family album” Blood Songs, he still has time to sing about the most important things in his world – family, friends, love, life.

Frank Zappa would have been impressed, he deserves to be a major figure in his own right” – The Guardian

[Harper] has a quality that stands head and shoulders above anything else” – Edinburgh Evening News

Harper has so much musicianship in him that it just leaks out all over the place” – The Times

Perfectly constructed folk tunes with impassioned, and often witty, lyricism” – BBC Music

One of the finest guitarists of his generation. Splendid stuff” – MOJO magazine

Dylan for the iPod generation…Betjemen with a guitar” – Guitarist

Tankus The Henge: On Tour

Tankus The Henge: On Tour

Glasswerk are proud to present the dapper Tankus The Henge. Musically stretching to the far corners of musical genres the wild and wonderful world of Tankus The Henge projects madness like you have never seen into their live performances, more the reason you should catch them on the following dates:

[Click on dates for tickets]

21st October – Scala, London
04th November – Studio2, Liverpool
05th November – Gullivers, Manchester

At the end of a busy summer Tankus the Henge release ‘Smiling Makes The Day Go Quicker’. Already a crowd favourite and a set closer this anthem of hope in the face of adversity is the final single from their first album.

Both the band’s previous singles ‘Cakewalk’ and ‘Recurring Dream’ featured on Alex Lester’s Radio 2 show as well as Chris Hawkins’ 6 Music show.

The Tankus the Henge sound draws from a multitudinous array of influences including rock, ragtime, reggae, blues, funk, punk and soul.

Veering between the Beatles and Blur then over to Tom Waits, The Doors and The Queens of the Stone Age theirs is a big new music possibly best described as:

Like The Clash from New Orleans

Nikolaj Torp Larsen – The Specials

Having performed over 100 times in 2015 already the fantastic Tankus the Henge live show ebbs and flows like a small boat on a turbulent sea. In the last few weeks alone they’ve played 30 festival shows including Isle of Wight, Glastonbury, Boomtown, Port Eliot, WOMAD, Wickham and Watchet.

Tankus festival shows in Europe have so far included Benicassim in Spain, Lott in Germany, WOMAD in Gran Canaria, Penabilli in Italy and Bern in Switzerland.

With their charismatic frontman, Jaz Delorean, looking like a lost character from a Terry Gilliam film Tankus the Henge launch into their live shows like a band possessed. Jaz grew up around Carters Steam Fair, the vintage funfair still touring the country today, and brings the fairground experience to the Tankus the Henge stage set.

Imagine Suggs, The Clash and Paolo Nutini mixing a musical Ska recipe ..

Glasswerk Magazine

The song Smiling Makes The Day Go Quicker is an anthem for a world of broken promises and dreams gone awry, and while it follows a central character of a girl whose small town gets enveloped by the city, it is fundamentally hopeful. There may be a light at the end of the tunnel, and yes, it may be a train, but if you don’t get hit by it, it may take you far away from here again.

There is also a growing number of people with unique Smiling Makes The Day Go Quicker tattoos, however, it doesn’t include anyone in the band.

“That’s wonderful, ..I love that. It reminds me of a mixture of early Kinks, Squeeze and a bit of Blur mashed in. His voice is his own, …so great. I love it.”

(Smiling Makes The Day Go Quicker)

Dave Davies – The Kinks

It’s wild isn’t it.”
(Recurring Dream)
Alex Lester BBC Radio 2

A band I was turned onto by The Wonderstuff’s Miles Hunt. Great name, ..’Tankus the Henge’. This is entitled ‘Smiling Makes The Day Go Quicker’, …doesn’t it just.
Gary Crowley

….a virtual carnival of sound that’s high on energy and deep on soul. With copious helpings of R&B blues, funk, disco, Django, a dose of Dexy’s, a drop of Ray Davies and a pinch of Madness emerging throughout the eleven tracks – it’s an exciting mélange of sound.”
Simon Wells (Guardian, Record Collector)

Mega Ran Taking The Rainbow Road To London!

Mega Ran Taking The Rainbow Road To London!

Glasswerk is proud to present Mega Ran AKA RANDOM. You can catch him live at Surya on the 10th September

RANDOM (a): Unpredictable, Following no particular pattern, deterministic…a system whose evolution cannot be predicted exactly. Random, aka Random Beats, aka Big Ran personifies what Hip-Hop should be: Spontaneous, fun, and true. Every album conveys a different theme, a different vibe and a different emotion.
Welcome to The Random Experience, where You Are the Music.

Born Raheem Jarbo in Philadelphia to a southern mother and African father, Random’s songs are filled with all of the heartache, pain, triumph, tragedy and fun that come with everyday living. A Philadelphia native and Phoenix transplant, graduate of Penn State University and middle school instructor, Random speaks to the everyman, transcending race or class barriers.”I never want anyone to predict my next move,” he says.

You can, however, expect the unexpected from Random, hence the name. After teaching himself to make beats on the MTV Music Generator software for PlayStation, Random landed a job at a Philadelphia studio as a producer and engineer. During downtime, he would create his first demo tape. This led to Random signing with indie label RAHM Nation Recordings and releasing his debut album, The Call in 2006. Random made waves by going way left of his backpack roots when he released “Mega Ran” in 2007. It was an album completely comprised of sampled 8-bit beats from the hit video game series “Mega Man.”

This led to an unprecedented barrage of work from Ran. The album (and its follow up, Mega Ran 9) virtually exploded after video game corporation CAPCOM offered Random a special licensing agreement, and calling on Ran to perform at Comic-Con and other special events. In 2009, Random signed a deal with Japanese record label River City Records and released RANDOMONIUM, a collection of previously released material. In 2010, Random collaborated with critically acclaimed producer K-Murdock to release FOREVER FAMICOM, a conceptual album paying homage to the 8-Bit NES and 16-Bit Super NES video game consoles.

In 2011, less than a year after the success of FOREVER FAMICOM, Random teamed with AZ producer LOST PERCEPTION to create “Black Materia,” an immense album experience that chronicled the events and story of the classic video game Final Fantasy VII. This album went on to rank in the top 10 of its categories on Amazon and iTunes, beating out mainstream stars such as Kanye West and Lil Wayne. in November, he released the final piece of the Mega Ran trilogy, Mega Ran 10, with CDs and even a special blue vinyl. A month later, Ran released “The Memorandum,” a throwback hip-hop experience with AZ hip-hop artist Mr. Miranda.

A remixed and remastered version of the Black Materia album released Jan 31, 2012.

Today, Random is no longer a teacher by title, but still travels the world to entertain and educate through the gift of music. From the clubs and lounges to the packed comic and gaming conventions all over, Random’s music has managed game and movie soundtrack placements and press coverage in Playstation Magazine, Wired Magazine, The Phoenix New Times, URB Magazine, Game Developer, Nintendo Power, and more. Something old..something new…something Random.

More Information:

Yes, it’s true. The Polyphonic Spree began July 15, 2000 as one man’s desire to hear a sound he dreamt about; before most bands over the last decade, that are often compared in sound and vision to the Spree, were formed.

Yes, it’s true. The Polyphonic Spree have traversed the globe several times over, much to the dismay of those that thought the band would never leave its hometown of Dallas, TX. They have appeared at every major music festival and on every late night television program.

Yes, it’s true. The Polyphonic Spree has ranged in size from 13 to 27 members. It has never been about the size but about the sound. The band currently has 22 active members.

Yes, it’s true. The Polyphonic Spree have released four full length studio albums up to this point: ‘The Beginning Stages of…,’ ‘Together We’re Heavy,’ ‘The Fragile Army,’ and ‘Holidaydream.’

Yes, it’s true. Tim DeLaughter has scored the motion pictures “Thumbsucker” and “Visioneers.” He also wrote and performed the Emmy nominated theme song for the Showtime series “The United States of Tara.”

Yes, it’s true. The Polyphonic Spree took somewhat of a hiatus while Tim demoed new material and recorded Preteen Zenith’s “Rubble Guts & BB Eye.” Preteen Zenith is Tim along with Philip E. Karnats formerly of Tripping Daisy and Secret Machines. Tim also revamped his label Good Records Recording, which released new music from The Polyphonic Spree as well as other artists.

Yes, it’s true. The Polyphonic Spree had a VERY busy year in 2012. They recorded their Holiday album ‘Holidaydream: Sounds of the Holidays Vol One’ as well as ‘Yes, It’s True.’ They toured the USA by breaking it up into three phases of their “You+Me” tour which culminated with the audio and video recording of their New York City Webster Hall show which will be released this year. They played the historic opening of Klyde Warren Park in Dallas. They performed for the first time their rendition of “Rocky Horror Picture Show” in London on Halloween night; it was a resounding success. The band will perform it at select festivals in 2013. The band concluded the year by taking the 10th anniversary of their legendary xmas show on tour. The Polyphonic Spree Holiday Extravaganza played to ecstatic audiences in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, and Dallas. They will do the same in 2013 in between the 2 year touring cycle for ‘Yes, It’s True.’

The album ‘Yes, It’s True’ was produced by The Speekers (Tim DeLaughter and Julie Doyle), Eric Drew Feldman (PJ Harvey, Captain Beefheart), With additional production by Tim Palmer (Pearl Jam, U2), who also served as the mix engineer. Tim and Julie had previously worked with Eric Drew on Tripping Daisy’s ‘Jesus Hits Like The Atom Bomb’ and The Polyphonic Spree’s ‘Together We’re Heavy.’

Yes, it’s true. The Polyphonic Spree is releasing their brand new album August 6, 2013. It contains 11 songs ranging in scope from the upbeat album opener “You Don’t Know Me” to the powerful closer “Battlefield.” Musically and lyrically, ‘Yes, It’s True’ is Tim’s strongest work yet. Lyrical themes range from the heartfelt “You’re Golden”, the mantra refrain of “Raise Your Head”, the playful improvised “Heart Talk,” and the tent-pole of the album “Blurry Up The Lines,” which deals with breaking away from the norms and our inner most comfort zones.

Yes, it’s true. There is somewhat of a new and different sound on the album than in the past: embracing drum machine, and orchestral instruments breaking out more on their own rather than heavy winded sectionals so to speak; while all of the Spree’s instrumentation is present. The feel is different. “I always enjoy a date with my Linn drum machine. Once I set the mood and tone I go from there in terms of songwriting,” says DeLaughter. “It’s really not a coincidence since drums were my first instrument as a kid. My first set was made out of Baskin Robbins empty containers. Later on I was in a rock band in 9th grade and they kicked me off the drums; I was replaced by someone much better at drums. I was bummed but they said I could sing. That’s how it started.”

Teenage Bottlerocket To Rock The Ruby Lounge

Teenage Bottlerocket To Rock The Ruby Lounge

Glasswerk is proud to present hardcore 90’s pop punkers! Teenage Bottlerocket! Signed to Fat Wreck Records TNB have made quiet a splash in the 90’s punk scene over recent years presenting themselves as a fresh talented face to a sound almost 25 years old and still rocking! You can catch Teenage Bottlerocket on the 11th August at Ruby Lounge Manchester

You probably know this much already: Teenage Bottlerocket (or simply “TBR” to their fans) is currently one of the hottest bands in punk rock and their new record, They Came From The Shadows, is highly-anticipated. But before we go any further you should probably know that they’re from Wyoming.

Crazy, huh? Although more famous for its frontier forts and characters like Butch Cassidy, the “Front Range” (as it’s known to the locals) may very well be the unlikely home to the next great punk rock band. At least that’s what the kids are sayin’. But don’t take our word for it, even Alternative Press featured them as a “Band You Need To Know in 2009”… and they don’t even have those Jennifer Aniston haircuts!

Their beginnings are as humble as they come. Three friends (two of them being identical twin brothers) wanted to start a fresh, no-bullshit punk band that defied—if not openly mocked—the corny emo groups that were pervading malls, mainstream, and MySpace.

They took the spirit of Midwest bands like Alkaline Trio and Dillinger Four and added the earnest sensibilities of the Ramones. It made for such an undeniably likable combination that other bands were asking themselves, “Why didn’t we think of that?” Not long after their forming, they doubled their number of vocalists and were joined by Kody, a fellow Wyoman and frontman of the beloved Lillingtons. With a solidified four-piece lineup they did a bunch of touring and two studio full lengths with Chicago label, Red Scare Industries. At this point things were happening fast for the young punks from the Cowboy State, and after playing shows with bands like the Queers, NOFX, The Falcon, and Dead To Me, they
were snatched up by Fat Wreck Chords. And that’s where Teenage Bottlerocket is today.

Oh, if you must know the truth, the band takes it’s name from an old spray-painted jalopy that used to cruise the streets of their hometown. Much of the time spent in those early days revolved around goofing off and carefree skateboarding, and that fun spirit is still reflected in their music today. It’s only fitting then that the first song on their breakout record would be the hilarious and punchy “Skate or Die”; a snappy tune that gleefully references the Bones Brigade and JFA. This and the other songs that make up

They Came From The Shadows are classic Bottlerocket, with an emphasis on fun times and hooky melodies. To further insure the album’s potential, this sucker was produced at Blasting Room Studios (Rise Against, Descendents, Lemonheads, etc), so you know it sounds huge and rockin’.

What will surely follow the release of their Fat Wreck debut is a bevy of touring. They’ve been to Europe multiple times, so you know they’ll be back in short order; and already booked is their first tour of Japan. Also lined up is a 2-month tour of North America this Fall with Reno’s Cobra Skulls playing support. That massive odyssey will take them all over the land and have them playing shows with The Lawrence Arms and Dead
Milkmen. When Teenage Bottlerocket mobilizes their band, they go all out and truly bring it. Such is their approach to songwriting, live shows, recording, and even partying on tour.

Few things are more exciting than a young band with a great new record on a new label. Their booming, seemingly-sudden popularity is reminiscent of bands like Against Me! and Gaslight Anthem, so who knows what to expect next from these upstarts. If their unhinged live show is any indication, it won’t be for lack of trying. So stay tuned and expect nothing but continued success from these punk rock bandits. They’re certain to make Wyoming proud.
